Need a HSF for Core i7 build

I am waiting for my thermalright TRUE to come in the mail. Still not sure how I should apply the TIM though lol

but anyway, most reviews say that this is hands down the best air cooler for i7
 
Thermalright TRUE has so far been proven to be the best performing cooler on the market. It's a little steep and can run you anywhere from $55 without fans to over $100 with the copper edition and then fan add ons.

If you value money more than having the absolute best I would suggest checking out Xigmatek's Dark Knight-S1283V. It comes with a fan and has the same basic design as the TRUE in terms of cooling thus only falling behind by 1-2 degrees C in the reviews I've checked out. At $41.99 with free shipping on newegg I'd have to say that's a pretty damn good deal that's hard to pass up. The V8 is a good cooler but with the price/performance ratio I don't really see why you'd choose it over the Xigmatek.
 
Yeah, that's the one we're talking about. If you're retiring your Q6600 rig you might look into seeing if you can get a new mounting bracket for relatively cheap to reuse on your i7. I believe they have a "new" version for the i7 in which the main difference is just that the mounting bracket is for the i7 setup and not the previous intel socket set.

If you don't want to reuse the one mounted on your Q6600 I seriously suggest looking at Xigmatek's Dark Knight cooler.

Hmm i think i am just going to go with the Cooler Master V8, it looks cool and should look good with my Antec 900.
 
As was mentioned, Xigmatek S1283V Dark Knight is the best budget cooler.

If you already have a TRUE, I would strongly suggest using that (if you're getting rid of the Q6600 PC) and buying a 1366 bolt-thru kit.
 
I have the CM v8. It is cool and HUGE. In fact, depending on whether you are using the Antec 900 or 900v2 you might have trouble fitting it in the case. It does fit the CM 690 case beautifully though. Here are a few pics of my build so you can get a feeling for just how big it really is (link). To me, it is pretty much a work of art in the case but that really comes down to personal tastes.

The nice thing about this cooler in comparison to the Dark Knight and TRUE (which are both also awesome coolers, don't get me wrong) is that you most likely will not have to lap the CM v8, it comes machined pretty well whereas the dark knight and TRUE sometimes are not perfectly flat.

Honestly, as has been mentioned here, the TRUE is the best of the best after you lap it. If you already have the TRUE you may just want to do what others have mentioned and get the 1366 kit for it.

What is the best method to apply TIM(in my case MX-2) to the heatsink/CPU...I am thinking a small X on the CPU and it will be sufficient. Thoughts?
 
The V8 is only looks... Get a U12P, TRUE, or some Xigmatek that people for some reason seems to love.
 
According to the benchmarks the v8 is a lot more than only looks. It is within several degrees of the TRUE and easily in the top 5 for the price.
 
Don't mean to hijack this thread, but will the Dark Knight fit in a P182 with P6T Deluxe?
