OK I know Iwaki is the best but right now I cant justify buying one since Im putting away for a 939 FX-53 :D
SO basicly Id like to get some user input between the Swiftech MCP600 Rev2 and the danger den 12v-D4

How loud are each of these pumps vs. my current eheim 1250?
The swifty pump is aluminum how is the impeller side with corrosion.
and Ive heard many horror stories about the swifty pump leaking and shit has this head ache been put a stop to?

Well, I own a Laing D4 (the 12V DD sells), and I have to say, its pretty loud. It moves a massive amount of water through my restrictive setup, so its very good in that respect. Its just a bit louder than pretty much anything else out there.

I hear that the MCP600 is pretty quiet though, but I can't vouch for that first hand.

If you don't mind the noise though, the Laing D4 will walk all over the MCP600. Its pretty much the next best thing in performance to Iwakis. :)

Loud in comparison to what? Louder than a 7K rpm 60mm fan ? I'm trying to avoid a loud system... and if the pump is really loud, it will not be worth it.

Oh, its nowhere near as loud as a 7k fan or anything. It just emits this noticable "buzz" sound. Its not that its really that "loud" I suppose, but I can hear that buzz outside of the room that computer is in if I have all of my fans turned down on it.

Thank you, sir ;)

I havent seen a water cooled rig so I have lots of inexperience hehe.

thanks for your patience.

hmmm if it can be heard outside of your room...even with the fans down..I think I may ahve to shy away from it LOLI have to sleep with this thing in my room...so that makes it a no go :)

have to sleep with this thing in my room

Same here so I turn it off :p

Exactly how loud is it? Will it be an annoyance over my 15,000 rpm SCSI drive (which I have slept in a dorm room with) Will case damping quiet it?

I know it performs better than the MCP600, especially with the 3/4" version which I just ordered.

No, damping, vibrational padding etc., don't do the trick with the D4. Its a buzz coming from the impellor i think, rather than the whole pump vibrating. makes the same sound when its in my hand. I really don't find it that obtrusive, myself, but I could see how some people would. It sounds kind of like.... those clippers they use when you get your hair cut (the tiny ones, not the big ones) to trim your hairline on the back of your neck, just higher pitched. I guess it sounds similar to that. I just hope that your barber or whoever doesn't have rediculously loud clippers, or else you'll get the wrong idea! ;)

As far as your 15k drive goes... I really couldn't say. What kind of drive is it? I have a 15k.3 which I can barely hear at all in the first place, so I can definitely hear it over that. And I think "annoyance" over the sound of your drive might be too subjective for me to really give an accurate answer to.

my dolphin dp-650 does the impellor buzz thing... it may be possible to fix it in the same manner as the via aqua 1300 fix, but this is a $50 pump so i'm not gonna do it until i know i can get a replacement quickly. VERY quickly. (me != patient most of the time)

but i've been looking at the danger den 12V pump for a while now as a possible [shielded] replacement for my current pump. we'll see. but if the pump noise is the same as on my pump, then it should be fine in a case with the side on.

Yeah, I didn't really want to bust my $75 pump open to try to fix it, and then find out that I broke it. I really think the noise is fine, but I'm just fairly tolerant in that respect. Others might care a lot. The only fan I've heard that actually annoyed me is a 92mm Tornado. Even the 190 CFM 120mm Deltas or the 8k 60mm deltas didn't bother me that much.

It's an IBM Pirahna, it's marginally noticible from outside my room.

Oh well, if it's too noisy I'll just turn the music up during the day and leave it off at night. Gives me an excuse to leave all my fans at 12V too. :)

Yeah, I've never heard IBM's 15k drives before, so I wouldn't know.

If I could record it and post it somewhere I would... Now that I'm actually at my computer that has this pump in it (I've been at work all day), it actually seems quieter than I made it out to be. Hmm... Sounds a lot quieter than the clippers that I was thinking of. Sorry I suck at describing sound. :(

hmm....you give the danner pumps a try yet?

I would but the idea of ripping the thing appart to silicone the intake side and what not is not very appealing...too many half assed things going on with the danner...right now either the swifty or the dtek black version are in my sights...and iwaki wont be in my case till I change cases...unless someone can point out an iwaki that is the same size or smaller than my Eheim 1250 but has a higher head rated than my 1250

My mag 5 has been running for a year and a half and I haven't done a single half assed thing with it. The O-ring seal is stock and has not been modified, and the inlet and outlet have not cracked (I use plastic barbs with silicone tape)

I would strongly recommend the Mag 3 if you are looking for a reliable and high performance pump.

If i'm not mistaken, I believe that it was only the Mag 3's that had the problem with the impellor housing. To my knowledge, the 5's didn't leak at all. :)

It's the sound caused by the electronic switching of the coils of the motor to create the rotational magnetic field for the impeller.
I don't know the exact frequency of this switching, but if you ever heard a "sawtooth" or "square wave" audio signal from an oscillator through a speaker you'd know what it sounds like...
It's not loud, it's just really "annoying".

CD :)
