Need a great case for Fileserver

Hey all,

Need your help on choosing the right case for my fileserver. My budget is $350 cause i need to spend some $ on a good power supply. Right now I'm looking at the Stacker 830 and the older 810. I'm leaning more towards the 830 because of the looks. I'm really not digging the looks on the 810. I currently have 5 HD's and plan to upgrade to 8. So space and cooling is a big concern.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance...

I second the Stacker 810. I think the 830 is too ugly, it is nowhere near as rugged looking as the 810.

Just to throw another out there..

of course, the lian li v2000 would be a pretty good option.

Plenty of hdd space with the quick removal design, plenty of space for a beefy psu, and pretty good cooling. Its a monster case if you've ever seen it in person.

Is it the V1000 that doesnt allow for the beefy psu?
I have the v1000 that I'm finishing up my build on right now. You can fit a big extended psu in it most definetly. You just have to take out the PSU divider bracket and 1st hdd rack. They come out with screws really easy. I saw a pic somewhere on the web where a guy fit the big 1000w PCP&C into a v1000.

Will I be able to reinstall the 1st hdd rack after the P/S is installed?

This is the p/s I plan on purchasing.

i think the stacker 810 is a good choice.

it's a good case, and has tons of cooling.

Do not go with the V2000 if you want to use more than 4 drives. The design of the drive bay on the bottom, only the middle 4 drives get any real airflow. Even my fairly cool running WD 400s get hot to the touch.

I second the stacker 810 recommendation.

I third the 810 recommendation, but I can't recommend the Liberty 500 for your application. The SATA and 4-pin connectors are on the same cables (2 of each on four cables, I think). I own that PSU and can barely stand it with the two CD-ROM's and two HDD's I have. Unless you want to make a custom cable (a la 'Rage: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=714871&page=10&pp=40), then I suggest getting a Silverstone or something with a different cable configuration.

yea.. thats a normal atx sized psu.. it would fit no problem at all.

1 think your going to want to think about when building a file server - is the HDD's. You already stated that your going to want to buy a beefy power supply - and make it an 8 drive array. You have your eye on the 810 - good choice - especially since it supports 2 - count em - 2 power supplies. No modding needed - if you power the system on - because of a splitter cable - both psu's come on immediately. GREAT FOR 8 HDD's. My roommate has one and he runs 10 HDD's in it - and still uses it as a gaming rig. Trust me - that case has room for anyone to grow on. And at 150 - it leaves you with A LOT of financial headroom.

Thanks a ton for all the replies everyone. 810 it is. :p
Before you buy, you might want to take a look at a case that is meant to be a server case in the first place. Something like this Supermicro (Here is SuperMicro's product page on it, and it will fit a standard ATX board, so don't let the "Dual Xeon" thing scare you.)

Anyways, it has 8 hotswap bays built in already (with the Stackers, you're going to have to spend extra on hotswap bays, or have to deal with drive rails or add-in cages), in addition to the other storage, has a quality thermal design, and already comes with a solid power supply. If you don't like that one you can see more here, just look at the ones that have a "T" at the end of the first number (i.e. my linked one is a 743T), but you can browse the other sections as well. Since you mentioned that this is going to be specifically a file server, you might as well get a product specifically engineered to do just that.
