Got a friend with an old computer with an agp card. I need a good agp card and was looking for recommendations. He has a 1920x1080 monitor and his old intel chipset integrated graphics just aint cuttin the mustard. Won't even run the monitor at native resolution. I'm looking to buy one used off feebay most likely

Try to find a used 6600GT card, that's probably the most pain free thing (cheaper and less power). Which Windows OS are we talking about here though ... don't spend a lot of money on an old, old, old system though. Stay on the cheap.

(lol at the agp 6800GT on ebay for $160.)

I think XP is fine ... (last week someone was trying to update an ME or 98SE system and the drivers for some agp cards just don't go back that far, lol.)

Yeah or 6200 ... what's the real problem with the IGP -- Just the native resolution?

Don't forget to check the connectors (DVI vs DB15).

well, he is running everything is slow... video playback , webpage scrolling, etc, got the latest drivers, running it in 32 bit color desktop, I think the max it will push is something a little less than the 1920 x 1080 native resolution

6200 because its usually passively cooled and it seems like he's not playing games.

no definitely not playing games. Just want videos and other 2d stuff to play and a decent speed when in the native res of the monitor

What kind of processor is it? I retired my old Athlon XP 3000+ and 6600GT AGP computer and donated it to my dad. It occasionally struggles to play anything over 360 resolution on youtube.

Oddly enough, it could still play L4D2 on mostly low settings with about 17-27 fps.

I know its not what you asked but I'd really consider building new computer. Microcenter CPU/mobo deals are amazing.

you'll need a newer agp card to do hardware acceleration for video's as that proc is not gonna cut the mustard with anything over 320x240 rez. Put a cork in her, she's done...

Its a shame AGP cards are so expensive i have a dell blah blah i wanted to spruce up slightly for my cousin to have it has 4 gigs of ram a 478 p4 3.4 with HT and is a fairly decent computer.

I got on the egg and looked at the agp cards they had the only decent two are a 4650 and 4670 but ill be damned if im gonna pay the more for a 4670 than i could get a gtx460 for.

Its just the price you pay for trying to shoehorn in new tech into old tech. Those Northwood chips are almost 8 years old now.

Its not costing them any more to produce that bit of silicon any more than the PCI-E card that is $60 cheaper. It is a little bit insane to think that anyone is paying that premium for AGP.

for stuff that old, never buy new. Checkout the FS/FT section.

Yes it is costing them more. Because AGP is an old platform, companies don't produce as many of them. Its a LOT cheaper to produce 10,000 of a product than 1000. There is no such thing as a reference AGP card anymore. Neither Nvidia or AMD make them so you have to depend entirely on the board partners. Its not insane at all, these companies have to put a lot of work into Legacy hardware.

I have a 6800 that I can let go for, eh, whatever you feel is competitive with everyone else's offerings.
