Need a good screen for X-Rays

One of my wife's friends is looking for a monitor for her dad for Christmas. He is an orthopedic surgeon and needs something that will very clearly show x-rays. He wants at least a 23 inch screen and my wife's friend doesn't want to spend more than $300. She doesn't know anything about monitors and asked if I could help her pick something out.

What I can't decide is whether to point her to IPS, TN or maybe PVA panels. I know the Dell U2311 is popular and is pretty close to her price range but I'm a bit worried that the duller blacks sometimes associated with IPS might be an issue when reading x-rays. Also his desire for a 23+ inch screen and her desire to spend less than $300 makes me think that TN might be a better option for her. I don't know all that much about panels, but I know more than she does and agreed to help her out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The U2311H's black level is as good as it gets for IPS and TN without paying more for an S-PVA or C-PVA screen. The U2311H suffers from bad quality control as well, so be prepared to exchange it a few times, though it is the best IPS display and they all suffer from QC in that price range.

The Acer G245H is 0.13cdm/2 vs 0.14cdm/2 on the U2311H once calibrated however it's a Glossy (screen prone to relflections) TN and that''s only slightly deeper.

The only way to get better blacks is with the Eizo Foris FS2311 or EV2333, both of which cost around 600$ (black level is 0.04cdm2 vs0.14cdm/2 on the U2311H).

Turning down the brightness lower then 100cdm/2 (also lowers black level) is probably going to be the only solution. Screen uniformity and color accuracy will be important for X-Rays. Again the Dell is the best choice for 300$, if you can get a good unit.
 
I thought that xrays are normally stored in a different colorspace compared to sRGB or AdobeRGB which "normal" monitors seem to approach. You'd have to look up on DICOM part 14, but i'm thinking that the gamma is above 2.2.
I probably wouldn't go for S-PVA in this case due to gamma-shifting (even if they are small, it may mean a lot for this purpose).
For $300, forget medical monocrome monitors which have the ideal (crazy) brightness. U2311 seems like a good advice as already suggested, and should be near the price range you want.
 
I might sue for malpractice if something went wrong and I found out my orthopedic surgeon was using a $300 monitor. If he's just preparing slides for a class he's teaching or something like that, fine. But if he's doing diagnostic or prep work, he needs a DICOM-certified monitor.
 
It's possible that whatever monitor you can buy for $300 won't be usable at all for x-rays, and that'd of course be a shame.

I have a friend doing work with x-rays and he talks of figures of over $7000. But I can imagine it depends on what kind of work you do.

But for what it's worth, the U2311 is a good bet for that sum. I'm not convinced that IPS is better than *VA though. I'd imagine that the key is relative differences and not absolute values, and then the gamma shift could actually be somewhat useful. But if one had to exploit that then I'm not so sure it's such a sensible solution anyway.
 
yeah you're gonna need to spend 10-20x the original though - curious to see what's offered though
