Need a good defrag utility

I need a good defrag utility or something. Preferrably a free one but I am willing to pay for a good one.

I'm tyring to fix a problem with a friends computer. Every time the system boots up it says there's a problem with the hard disk and it needs checked. This happens every single time, even if I let go through the check and it says that nothing is wrong. The file system is FAT32 and I've been thinking about switching it over to NTFS for one thing. I also would like to do a defrag of the hard drive but windows defrag (on this system) always hangs after a little bit. I even downloaded the 30 day trial version of Power Defrag but it appeared to simply use the windows defrag program and once again the defrag hung.

I guess I need some utility that will not only defrag this hard drive for me but also possibly tell me if the hard drive is about to fail. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Paithar

Diskeeper - the hands down best defragementing utility out there..

you should backup the machine's live data, format it to NTFS, reload the OS, and rebuild your data, then defragment. Upgrading anything (os or fs) doesnt cut the mustard.

I currently use Diskeeper Pro 9.0, & have no particular complaints, but I'm thinking of trying O&O b/c I've heard so many good things about it.....

I will use nothing other than O&O

But you have to buy it.
It might come with a 15 day trial or something though.

i have used disk keeper in the past with no problems, but i think im going to give this o&o a look myself.
