Hey, I am new to photography in general, and would like a digital camera that I am able to take decent quality pictures with. I would like it to have a rechargeable battery if possible (not a HUGE) deal. I am not very interested in its ability to take video, however that is a bonus if it can. I was looking at the one posted below, but I figured i{d ask the community for any other ones they may suggest. Once again, looking to spend around 150, really not wanting to go over 200 unless theres a rediculous savings or something. Sorry for some of the typos, i{m in a cyber cafe in mexico and they have a weird keyboard... thanks guys!

the one i was looking at...,
Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Blue 8.0 MP 2.5" 230K LCD 3X Optical Zoom Digital Camera

Have that one... Got it for the wife since our A560 died and she loves it. Light, compact and decently fast. Takes great pictures and was fairly cheap to boot. Went to Sterlingtek afterward and picked up two more batteries for it (has a proprietary battery not AA). Some people have issues with proprietary vs. standard (AA, etc.) batteries but for $25 I got two extra batteries that are longer life and work great.

Noise handling in auto is not bad and have played with a few other settings. All in all, if it is just going to be something cheap that you can lug around and pull out when needed then I dont think you can go wrong. Go to www.dpreview.com and check out their reviews on the different P&S and see what you come up with.

thanks for the site, and its definately interesting to get some reviews. Im currently thinking i will bite on the powershot sd1100 IS, although i am going to wait until i get back in the states regardless. Any ideas on how Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W130 or any other viable options compare¿ (i cant find a normal question mark on this mexican keyboard...)

on second thought... I don't care about the battery type, and after researching it seems like it may actually be better if I have AAs. Anyways, if theres any better suggestions for 150 to 200 that use any type of battery, let me know... Im basically open to ANYTHING.... damn this mexican keyboard

I have the SD1100IS as well. I would highly recommend it and in addition, you should take a look at CHDK (google it) as well - I'm not sure what the current status on the 1100 is, but I was using it on my (now stolen) SD1000 and it was pretty amazing what it adds to an already great camera.

I used to have a sony cybershot camera. It worked really well, but I find that SD cards are typically more expensive and many devices seem to use SD cards, so you can recycle your old camera cards into PMPs, phones, whatever. Not sure if the Sony cameras still use MS pro duo or whatever it is, but thats something to think about as well.

the canon's are nice and there are tons of generic batteries and chargers etc out there so you can get all the acessories for like $20

I'm confused by Canon's numbers because it looks like the higher number isn't the better option. I'm on the fence between the Canon 880 IS and the 1100 IS.

I wonder what is so much better about the 880 over the 1100. I'm pretty much upgrading after my SD300 was stolen a few months ago. I was planning to keep that thing forever...lol.
