My pc today is going super slow, i really dont know what is going wrong. I have windows xp pro and games wont install, uninstalling programs that would take seconds, today took up to 10 minutes to uninstall.

What is going on here? Ive ran a virus scan with norton as well as spyware scans... nothing.
 
My secondary hard drive and cd burner uninstalled itself a while ago, windows couldnt detect it until i rebooted.

Hard drive sounds fine.
 
I would say backup whatever you can and format it. Windows is probably having some strange errors.
 
I updated the BIOS 2 weeks ago, never really had a problem until a few days ago.

Should i run Primetest 95 and see if it finds any errors? if it is hard ware, this will tell me ?

That's a great way to find out whether Windows is screwed or if it's actually a hardware problem.
 
Are you being sarcastic or serious? Usually i do that to find out whats going on. If its a fresh install everything should be running great. From there I would troubleshoot some more if i am still having problems.
 
I only formatted about 3 months ago, i dont fancy doing it again right now, i have so much crap to sort out, would take hours to backup.

I will run primetest in a few hours time, i got to go for a little while, ill post back later tonight on this thread.
 
Sorry.

I forgot it was his secondary drive... I was thinking he'd reformat and reinstall Windows. :rolleyes: :p

Could be memory if not the HD. As suggested run the prime test FIRST before
reinstalling. That is a drastic step without a backuo....
 
I ran prime test for about an hour today and it didnt come up with any errors. I know it should be left on for hours between 12 and 24 hours for maximum results but this is a family pc and its always being used. So its hard to test for a long time. I will test this for hours when i get more of a chance to.

I also ran Memtest about 2 weeks ago and left it on for 2 hours and it didnt find any errors (again i had to cancel it half way because the pc needed to be used by my brother)

Ive had this message before about 3 times in the last 2 months but i got it again today. I was rebooting and a blue screen came up which said..

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown. To prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you have seen this message then restart your computer, if you have seen this message before....

(It then suggested certain things to do like checking if shadowing is off etc)

Now ctaud2k.sys according to google is something to do with audigy 2 sound card drivers, well i dont have an audigy 2 sound card, however i did install audigy 2 drivers for my sound blaster live 5.1 4 weeks ago, but i uninstalled them since then and went back to using normal SB Live drivers.

What is this?
 
u managed to solve ur problem? From the look of it, could be the sound card driver.. I suggest installing driver remover... then completely removed all creative drivers, reboot...and reinstall ur sound driver( the good one), hope it helps.
 
My guess is that installing the incorrect drivers screwed up the system. Un-Install the drivers, and try to get the drivers for your sound card (from the Creative web site). Start off with that (it seems the most likely problem), and see if it works.
 
I havent had this problem for a few weeks now. My computer is seriously screwed up, i may have to take it to the shop or give it a good clean out.

I'm assuming that you have the XP disc so just do a system restore. Put everything you have on another hard drive, computer or disc...

I restore my OS about 3-5 times a year. ;)
