Sounds like you'll want a Core i7 920 build - you can really use the extra features of LGA 1366 (more bandwidth for expansion cards, SLI + Crossfire on the same board).

But it looks like all the good deals on the 920 are over (can't find it for less than $275 online). However, I spotted this combo in another thread:

i7 920 + XFX 5850

I'm not very good at LGA 1366 builds, so I'll let someone else take a shot at it :)

Yeah, my last computer is almost 5 Years old.
burning out, time for an upgrade.
been a while since I looked at parts, have no idea what anything means anymore ):

$1264 total! That's a little above the original spec, but it leaves him room to grow.

Nice build, but your last link is wrong (you copied and pasted the link to the Coolermaster 212 Plus instead of a link to ram).

That motherboard is SLI But you're suggesting a ATI GPU?
Wouldn't it be better to go Nvidia so I could grab another card at some point and SLI?

Read the comments on Newegg:

Pros: All Vista 64 drivers worked with no issues.
Looks great.
Good price point.
Crossfire works fine, though not advertised

Cons: Could use 2 more 2-port USB headers on board to allow for internal card reader plus case built-in USB ports.

Other Thoughts: All my research on crossfire vs. SLI tells me that for SLI to work, the mobo has to have certain features (like nVidia chipset) but the crossfire does not depend on mobo components. This board was not advertised as crossfire-ready, but the other boards in the series were. This was a little confusing, but I took a chance because this was $60 less than the next board up and this had everything I wanted in a mobo (couldn't see spending $60 for 2 USB ports and an extra network adapter.)

It's not advertised because EVGA has an exclusive partnership deal with Nvidia.

It also is not advertised as Crossfire-ready because the slot spacings are designed for the non-flexible SLI connector dimensions, not Crossfire. But you can get around that with flexible Crossfire cables like these (Assuming your 5850 doesn't come with a cable-style connector):

Yes you can crossfire them

You most definitely can! There have been world records set with the 5870s and the 4way Classified motherboard. You can run ATI cards on any x58 motherboard. The ATI cards also take advantage of the NF200 chip on the Classified 759 and 762, just as do the Nvidia cards.
