I just started actively raiding again in World of Warcraft for the first time in 3 years and I need a cheap-o headset to use, something around the $50 price range. I don't expect it to be amazing of course, as long as its sturdy and it holds up. The last headset I had was the Logitech gaming headset - I don't remember the exact name but it had a funky half-open-ear design, it was around for a long time so some of you may know which one I'm talking about. The leather around the earpieces ended up cracking, which made it very uncomfortable as it would scratch my ears every time I put it on.

Feel free to just throw suggestions my way, I'm willing to think about spending a little more than $50 if its worth it but again, I'm going for bang/buck (mostly buck) so please don't give me a list of $150 headsets :D Thanks [H]!
 
Newegg has the turtle beach HPA2 for 70$, this is what I recommend. People will tell you that surround headphones aren't any good, please don't listen to them. It will honestly make your gaming a lot more fun. There are cons and here they are: after a few hours the cups start to press your earlobes, and the amp has slight hissing. The radical boost in immersion more than makes up for it.

Rubber fillers came off. Wtf is this sticky stuff on my neck? Dammit Logitech.

Band on the back broke. I'm not rough with my things, but these were a bit brittle.

Gets uncomfortable to wear after about 30 min. I have small ears though.

The USB dongle isn't bad though. It's nice being able to split my sound out between programs (headset is for skype, speakers for everything else).
 
i don't have personal experience with these, but they get recommend a lot to people on a tight budget. JVC HARX700 + Zalman clip on mic. read a few reviews and see if they will suit your needs.

get the gamecom plantronics 377/367 they have wonderful SQ i mean for what you pay for them its way more than worth it... i compared them to my 150 dollar head phones (SRH750dj) and they were a lil bit muddier but other than that they were pretty good.

Hm, lot of interesting suggestions so far. Broad price range from the $30s up to the $80s.

One thing that I'm going to rule out right now is adjustable microphones, i.e. the bendy ones. I had a headset like that in the past and I found myself getting way too distracted with it lol, plus I just think it looks a little goofy. I'd much rather go with a headset that has the mic on a fixed swivel.

TD had the Razer Carcharias for $30 but I didn't find that deal until it was too late unfortunately. Still considering it though, Amazon has it for $70 and I've heard a lot of good things about it - anyone have personal experience with it?

I know little next to nothing when it comes to PC audio but I'm just running on integrated sound right now. A little off topic but do you guys feel that a dedicated sound card is worth it for gaming, and also, is it worth it to get a surround-sound/5.1 headset if I don't have a sound card? Also is there a big difference between USB and a 3.5mm?

I second the Plantronics Gamecom 377s. That is what I use, very nice for the price. Mic is good too. A friend of mine liked mine so much he went and bought a pair, he usually buys expensive headsets. Should have no problem buying them for about $40-50. They carry these at Best Buys around me for $50, newegg sometimes offers super deals on these, my friend got them there for $25 w/ free shipping.
 
Thread necro.

So shortly after I made this topic I realized that my webcam has a built-in mic so I've been using that for raiding. However, I do have to close the door when I raid because usually there is someone in the house watching TV and I wouldn't be able to hear unless I either close the door or turn my volume WAY up (which might end up polluting the other room with the TV...)

For now, closing the door is fine but its starting to get pretty warm where I live and my room can get fairly suffocating after raiding for a few hours. I would be fine with just the webcam mic but I want to be able to leave my door open AND raid at the same time so I figure I might as well just get a headset anyway. I've upped my budget to $100 MAX. So far I have a few in mind and if anyone has any personal experience with these I would love to hear some opinions.

I am not adverse to using a regular set of headphones + a mic but it also has to stay within my budget. A lot of people recommend the Zalman clip-on mic but I've also heard that it can sound a little muddy and voice communication is very important to me when I'm raiding.

Also worth noting is that I also just picked up a sound card (the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty), if that makes a big difference at all in picking out a headset. I was going to stick with onboard and I hate that Fatal1ty guy, but it was on sale for $40 AR at Fry's so I said why the hell not and bought it anyway.
