Well, I bit the bullet the other day and bought two more 9800gx2's. So I now have 3. I will soon purchase another one to go on my k9a2 platinum I also recently purchased. My question is what case should I buy? Ive considered either a Antec 902 or a Armour+. They both have adaquate slots (atleast 8) and arent that expensive, but I dont like the side fan layouts. Does anyone here currently run a 4x dual slot gpu rig that can recommend a case with adequate cooling?

take a look at the antec 1200 and its insane amount of fans.. it may not look pretty.. but it works damn well and is a HUGE! case..

True. But it only has 7 expansion slots. Thats why im so limited. I need atleast 8

those are some nice cases.. though i think it comes down to the xclios 1000 black and the thermaltake armor+'s.. though im not totally sure with all those fans on the xclios.. just seems like its going to be a biznatch to get the fan layout just right so that your not creating to much positive pressure or to much negative pressure in the case..

I would love for someone to make a rack capapble server case that can do 8 expansion slots :D

Technically, you don't need 8 slots, you just need enough room after the seventh slot so that the card will fit. I was able to cram my cards in an old tower case by just bending the bracket on the last card a little bit.

If you're not running an open case, the key is having ventilation to pull heat off the top of the cards. I've noticed on most cases that the side fans don't line up with the card slots very well. Getting the hot air out is going to be more important than getting cool air in.

Exactly. I'm actually thinking about running the cards naked and then just installing a fan with a special made vent on the cards themselves just for exhaust heat. This would allow me enough cash savings to either buy the 4th card or start a second 4x 9800 rig :)

Dito my friend. But unfortunately more points works out to be more efficient than a nice case every time. Well i have decided to run these naked for now. Oh, and i just plopped down another $172 and purchased my 4th 9800gx2. So now i will have two rigs that run two 9800gx2s each until i buy more. I think I will stop at 2 full 4x rigs which should help me to a solid 80k ppd.

.....I really need to stop spending money :(

Remember, Folders Anonymous meets Tuesdays.

I think we should set up a designated IRC channel for Folders Anonymous...there are enough of us out there that need support:)

just get a 4U and mod the last hinge or whatever you call it, the lip from the 4th card
Im gonna rack mine in pull out drawers lol, too easy.

The cases that have already been listed are quite expensive.

There are really only 2 readily available and reasonably priced cases that can accomodate 8 double wide graphics cards* (asterisk because one of them requires some file action ;)

* Antec Nine Hundred Two

- tons of ventilation options include a 200mm Big Boy exhaust on the top and a side exhaust fan that's perfect for exhausting the hot air from coverless GX2s
- the rubber grommetted holes in the back of the case designed for routing liquid cooling tubing is perfect for routing the extra power cable for the Tt VGA ToughPower supplementary PSU
* Antec Skeleton

- Super Big Boy 250mm fan that blows downwards, can be reversed to exhaust up
- expansion slots use this plastic retention bar that I'm not a huge fan of
- had to file down the right-most edge of the ABS case design in order for the 4th GX2 to fit properly

I have both of the above cases with 4 x GX2s in my folding farm.

While it is true that you don't absolutely _need_ to have a case/tray that is designed for 8 slots, it sure is nice to have the slots pre-cut so you can screw mount the 4 cards in. I have 2 motherboard trays with 7 slots and the 8th part of the slot of the 4th card hanging out and needed to bend out the backplate. It "works" but for a rig with 4 double wide cards, it's nice to have a sturdy mount.
