Windows Vista one is worthless. I only want to backup two directories.
1. My Documents, all my documents and records and photo albums.
2. My Music

Since Vista's tool is ass-backwards, so I started using Nero's Backitup to an external USB hard drive. I don't really like it because it doesn't archive it into a proprietary archive format like the bkf files ntbackup of old used. Which may sound strange, but if one of those viruses that eat photos/documents of popular formats got past symantec av, then it would pwn my backup =(

Anyway, I've been using my school's edu address for ages, yesterday they notified me that they were dumping me :( ow. So I got myself hosted, 300gb of space.

I want to put my backup there now, what tools can do that, via FTP or something? Maybe the same tool where I can setup a job to make a local archive, and a remote archive?

I found that Chris Evan's guide provided some good ideas on how to backup efficiently and effectively.

I use that in combination with cwRsync (an rsync server for windows) to have my Linux machine pull incremental backups from my windows server via a slow WAN connection. if your hosting provider has shell access you may be able to make something similar work. The initial sync will be a PITA and slow, but subsequent ones ought to be rather quick. My slowly changing CVS directory saw rsync speed improvements of factor 1000 (yes one-thousand).

If you are interested, I could do a quick how-to on it.

i've used freeware synchback - http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html works well.

if you're into open source, jfilesync works well - http://jfilesync.sourceforge.net/

If you want to pay for something, I prefer SmartSync Pro - http://www.smsync.com/ I find this one to have the most options + allows me to do pretty much anything. I let it run in the background and it automatically backs up everythign several times a day.

I use all 3 - I trust SmartSync most though b/c I've used it for years + i've never had a problem with it. The others didn't work as well as automated backups.
