I just returned an Eizo EV2336 due to terrible uniformity and severe backlight leakage. In exchange I purchased the NEC P232W. The P232W is 100% better out of the box, with no backlight leakage and good uniformity even with uniformity control turned off. The only problem I am having with the NEC is when I attempt software calibration with my i1 Display 2 colorimeter. With the P232W in 'Full' preset mode, I try to adjust the RGB channels in the six axis OSD menu, but the RGB doesn't budge. I can adjust luminance, but not RGB. I understand that the i1 Display 2 is not reliable with W-LED backlighting, but it worked perfectly with the Eizo (also W-LED) yielding perfectly straight overlapping curves. I know the P232W has hardware LUT, and that SpectraView would solve all my problems, but if the i1 Display 2 worked with the Eizo, why not with the NEC? What am I doing wrong that the colorimeter will not respond to my OSD inputs?

I called NEC technical support. Although the guy was nice, he seemed clueless about calibration issues -- at least with regard to X-Rite products. He could only advise me that NEC recommends SpectraView software for calibrating this monitor. I then contacted X-Rite tech support. They were even less helpful, as the 1-year warranty on my color sensor had expired, and X-Rite only provides tech support during the warranty period. So I coughed up another $300 for the SpectraView Kit w/ NEC branded i1Display Pro. Only wish I had known that I would not be able to perform software calibration on a monitor with hardware LUT. Would have ordered the SV version of the P232W and saved a few bucks.

The six axis color control is not designed for changing the whitepoint. You shouldn't touch it at all because it will induce nonlinearities. Just use the xy fields of the WHITE control in the extended menu (not the RED, GREEN or BLUE controls presented on the same page – they regulate the color space emulation). You won't find direct RGB gain controls.

That doesn't indicate absence of even a big (absolute) error. Apart from only two correction types via driver/ firmware (CRT/ CCFL LCD) the i1 Display 2 suffers from poor inter instrument agreement (the NEC OEM version was selected) and aging organic filters. I recommend an upgrade to the i1 Display Pro (at least in the medium term).

See above. No problem at all. You can adjust the whitepoint via OSD. A programmable LUT (every display implements some kind of LUT, apart from some Thunderbolt constructions) doesn't prevent that kind of workflow.

Thanks for the help Sailor! The lack of direct RGB gain controls on the P232W is what stumped me. My previous monitors have had this. Although I didn't budget the additional cost of a new colorimeter + software when I bought this display, I'm sure I'll get a much better calibration with the SpectraView Kit using the hardware LUT. I did reset the factory defaults in the OSD to wipe out any adjustments done to the six-axis controls using the i1D 2, and I've uninstalled the Eye-One Match software. Although $800 poorer, I'm happy with the P232W. As I wrote in a previous post, the panel has good uniformity and virtually no leakage.
 
When working with only one standard gamut monitor (P232W), should metamerism correction be ON or OFF. I read somewhere that you can get better calibration results with metamerism turned off. Or does SpectraView turn this off automatically when calibrating?

Turn it off. Even in combination with a display emitting a very different spectrum (GB-r-LED, WCG-CCFL) you would individually try to find a visual match for your perception (that means calibration with different whitepoint targets) to attenuate effects of observer metamerism. This option is a convenience function for out of the box usage.

Okay, so I've calibrated the P232W with SpectraView and NEC branded i1Display Pro (D65, gamma 2.2 (52 steps), luminance 118 cd). Uniformity correction is level 2 (out of 5). Contrast ratio was set to default (880:1 calibrated). Looking at a gradient test image from gamutprints.com, gradients are very smooth with no visible banding. Looking at a highlight detail test image, highlight detail is visible starting at 253 (possibly 254). However, when viewing shadow detail test image, I cannot detect detail until 4, with no detail visible from 0 - 4. Any suggestions on improving shadow detail, or is this normal/acceptable for this display?
