Does anyone know of an LCD that's coming out which matches the NEC in quality that might perhaps be cheaper or without the glossy screen? I don't need the TV tuner, but am intrigued by the glowing reviews (pardon the pun). I need a quality LCD for my PS3.

Given that loads of new models were shown at CES I'm not sure if I should wait to see how the new models fare in terms of color quality/response and if that would mean that the NEC would drop quite a bit in price. Or do you think a price drop is unlikely?

Thanks for your thoughts.

The other day I was looking up the 20WMGA2 on Pricewatch and 5 or 6 places had it for $550ish USD (one place had it for $540 something). That's without being on sale or with a rebate. There are S-IPS monitors for less but not with specs of this one (which is AS-SIPS and is brighter/faster than straight S-IPS). The Dell 2007wfp is nice if you get a good S-IPS for on sale . I wouldn't pay 400 for it now knowing what I can do better for extra 150 (I think the matte finish look like dust but gaming in rents living room could be issue with glossy).

The new NEC models I heard about coming out are pricey. The 26" NEC LCD2690WUXi-BK just won Best In Show at MacWorld 2007 but it has estimated street price of $1699:

I heard about a new 24" that I heard will be matte finish and sell for around $1200-1400.

I don't use the TV tuner but I like the remote. It makes adjusting the thing on the fly easy and I don't have to fiddle with buttons that clicky-clack and fight back. Even without the speakers and TV tuner I would pay the same $550 I did. I know some of those "extras" can seem like silly ad ons that run up price but once I used the box it seemed as if NEC was giving away too much by throwing them in on an already good deal. It's sort of a weird animal that way. I had high expectations and they got exceeded. I am not used to that (especially with monitors and used cars)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts abcdelight. Definetly sounds like a one-of-a-kind LCD. I'm curious if there are any other 20" LCD's that are above average in terms of response/colour quality/contrast?

If NEC would simply offer the same model they do in Europe (20WGX2) with the corresponding price drop then I would probably have one on my desk now. The high price (especially for a 20") along with what I think is kinda fugly styling kills the deal for me. I hope that NEC has a replacement in the works that eliminates the tuner and adds a little styling work to the bezel/stand.

I think your doing pretty good with monitors you have if I recall correctly. I can understand the looks/TV tuner reservations since I had them myself. Some of that changed after having it in person though.

I didn't need the TV Tuner myself but the thing is without the tuner there is no remote (Amazon UK doesn't list one as included - which btw is charging around £400 - which would be over $800 USD). The settings I like for DVDs or photos will be different and the little nubby buttons on bezels are a pain in the buttsky for me. The remote works the menu nicely. Plus with the image persistance warnings about leaving LCD's on the remote makes it easy to turn on and off and/or to put into another video mode. Switching from component to s-vid etc is all pretty easy.

I really didn't like the way the NEC looked in pics before I bought it, but in person it looks better. I can't lie and say I like the 2 tone (it reminds me of my old silver/black Gateway) but peoples photos tend to use flash and reflections make bezel look brighter, rounder and bigger than it is (its less than 1/8th inch thick - you hardly see it from side). It's not a sexy beast but I don't hate it like I thought I would at all. I liked the way the Dell looked in pics but after a week of using it in person it just looked blocky to me in person. I like the way the NEC looks in person better now. I do miss the height adjustment on the dell but the NEC plants like a tree (hides wires real well too) where the Dell was sorta tippy. I'm either getting a wall mounted reticulating arm or a riser.

A Dell not on sale with their speaker bar version is 440ish. The NEC for another 100 isn't bad considering there are more inputs, remote etc.Of course if people like the matte finish then they don't need this. I mostly tout the NEC because I appreciate they seemed to have gone extra miles even more than extra cost shows. "Offcial" reviews often seemed to undersell this display while touting dressed-up TN's.

Oh here is pic I made showing how the Dell with its speaker bar. I added the nice bluish Dell color to NEC since they often put horrible looking things in their ads.
