I recently sent 3ware an email inquiring about their future support for NCQ. The response I got back suprised me.

Dear Allen,

Because 3ware has its own Command Queuing onboard our controllers
called 3CQ, their is no need for us to support NCQ. You can actually
save money by buying non NCQ drives and allowing our card to perform
this function for you. I hope this helps you Allen.

Sincerely,
David V. Llamas

so my question is this. Was this guy serious or are they full of it? Can a controller que commands and know where the head is on the HD to optimize it that way? Does anyone know if there are any benchmarks that test the queing abilities of the 3ware cards?

sure it can. it has to assume that LBA in order -> physical sectors in order, though. but after you make that huge leap in assumption, it's easy to make queueing algorithms to sort the list of commands.

wrt benchmarks, i'd guess 3cq is not an option, it's in the hardware all the time so you can't change it. but I could be wrong.
