I am trying to figure out how to ping a device that is hanging off a SMC modem/4 port router. This modem has a static WAN IP and hands out a 10.1.10.x LAN IP. I want to hang a device off the switchport and be able to use VNC to remote to that Devices IP from the web. In order to make this work, do I need to setup port forwarding? This modem is setup to NAT and I know this is the issue with reaching this device externally. If I had it my way, I would rather just connect the device to the modem using the modem's DHCP WAN address which would be routable and not utilizing NAT. I am not sure if this SMC modem can be configured to NOT use NAT. The modem was pre-configured and handed to me. I have no info on admin credentials to change any settings. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

if it's just 1 router (combo unit modem/router), you won't have the
issue i think you are worried about (double-nat).

Port forwarding not a problem.

Yes, you would need to either forward ports from the public IP to the private IP, or configure the modem to give the public IP directly to the device.
