NASA/ SGI super computer beats ALL

more news. NEC is planning (or maybe already has internally secretly) to reclaim the title by NEC SX-8, theritically planned to achieve 65 TF. Monthly rental of that will be ~$11K.

Apparantly Blue Gene is supposed to be cheap. Thats y its gonna rock. Smaller, cooler, faster. Rental/cost figures arent given yet, but IBM upto today has spent like $4B in super computing. Blue Gene once done will start a new breed called Ultra Computers.

The battle between NEC, IBM, and Intel is *far* from over.

1. The success of Columbia has inspired Intel's Supercomputing Team (the same folks that originally brought DOE ACSI-White, driven by 9,200 Pentium Pros) to build a newer *general-purpose* supercomputer platform, based on Columbia. Unlike Columbia, it will be scalable, with no fixed size (it can be scaled up or down, based on customer needs), and will support BSD, Linux, or Windows 2003 Datacenter Server. (One thing folks seem to forget about Intel: Intel also sells *complete systems* for specialized markets, such as governmental R&D; the Intel 302, and later 502, were complete systems that were targeted for this market. What scared Compaq and the rest of the Gang Of Nine was the idea that Intel would take the 302 retail.)

2. ASCI-White was a wake-up call for Big Blue's own Supercomputing Division, which had been the champion of RISC-based mainframes within IBM from the beginning (and with the death of Cray Computers, the biggest American supercomputer vendor). To see Intel ride in and steal a march on them (and even more embarrassing, to do it with a desktop processor-based supercomputer) hurt. Columbia is ASCI-White all over again.

3. NEC's SX-6 is another MITI brainchild (MITI is the Japanese Ministry of Information Technology and Industry; it is here that priority targeting of governmental funding and earmarking of priority projects is done). While the United States *used* to do something similar (the best known example is Project Lightning, which originated with NSA, IBM, Honeywell, RCA, and most of the major colleges and universities) they haven't done a MITI-style research targeting since Nixon was President. (ASCI-White was Intel's own idea.)

Lol, poor IBM.. Taken out right when they hit the top :p

But the rig they broke the record with is only a prototype. Next year the production model is going to ship & will have 10x the CPUs. I think that'll give them an edge.
