This may seem simplistic, but I'm looking to run something that's as close to a turnkey QNAP (or even better Synology) -style firmware on commodity hardware. Since these are linux distributions, is it literally possible to run the firmware from one of these devices on a standard PC / Server?
I want to spend as little time as possible building / customizing OS - I just want it to perform all the functions that a QNAP device could, without having to install something like debian and setting it all up.
I would generally go for something like a Synology device, but they don't get a PCIe slot until you are up in the $3K range, which seems excessive for the capabilities of the hardware.
I understand some config would be needed, but the less the better. What are my options?
