I'm looking for a low cost 2bay NAS. Trying to keep it under $200 and am looking at the following options...

Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo LS-WVL/E
Dlink DNS-323
Dlink DNS-320L
Dlink DNS-325

I can't decide if the low-end Buffalo and last-gen Dlink will be good enough.

I primarily want to use this NAS as an iTunes server, and as a DLNA server for my PS3 and XBox.

If you care anything at all about performance, stay far away from anything Dlink, they are crap. I have no direct experience with Buffalo, but I know that Synology and even Qnap make low cost 2 bay NAS's, unfortunately I think they fall into the over $200 but under $250 price tag.

Ok. From the looks of it, the only one that is in my price range is the Synology DS212j. Other than network performance, what do I stand to gain with the Synology versus the newer Dlink models?

The Synology's have their own "OS" with all kinds of capabilities, plug ins, all kinds of stuff. It might be nothing your interested in or you might find a few useful tools. In my opinion, the Dlink's are not real NAS products, they are a cheap attempt at a NAS, Synology on the other hand stands amont the real NAS's like Qnap, Thecus, Dlink and others. But thats just my opinion.

Another +1 for Synology. Their NAS products are second to none in terms of performance and software capability. Qnap is definitely a pretty close competitor though. Dlink isn't even in the same league however.

The DS212j is still a really solid NAS. 90MB/s down 50MB/s up plus the best NAS management software and app support on the market.

I really like the 213j. I've been able to find them new for about $200, and used for a little bit less. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one of these.

Sorry to threadjack (it's still mostly related :D). Was just looking at some NAS units last night. What's people's opinions on the Qnap units compared to Synology?

I have a Qnap and a Synology, I've had the Qnap longer, its a slightly older 6 bay unit and its never given me any trouble, its the fastest of my four NAS units and if I could afford to, I'd buy nothing but Qnap NAS's. They are however the most expensive of the NAS's but in my opinion, they are worth every dollar. Those who think Synologgy are great, and I count myself among them, you should try a Qnap, they are every bit as good as the Synolgoy and then better. How are they better? Construction, they are a mostly metal chasis with not as much plastic as they Synology. Performance, I can't give you raw numbers but I copy large MKV files to my Qnap all the time, no problem, with my Synolgoy, I have to FTP them, not sure why, but if I copy them in finder on my Mac the same way I do with my Qnap they chug for some reason, of course it I should point out that I am bonding the two gigabit interfaces on the Qnap and the Synology only has one interface, to be fair. As far as the interface goes, they are both similar, offering pretty much the same things in terms of feature sets etc.

I do recommend a synology,

But I would say that with a $200 NAS you are not going to get max gigabit speeds.

Plan for around 50-70 MB/sec sequential

I get around 80MB/s using just a Mediasonic RAID box with 4-2TB drives in RAID5 attached to the USB port on my router (Airport Extreme).

Plenty to stream 30-35GB 1080p Blu Ray rips to my HTPC via 5Ghz Wifi.

I ended up picking up a Synology DS212j yesterday, can't wait to start messing around with it.

Let us know how it works out for you (I was looking at these the other day :D )
