NAS on Win XP x64 Doable?

I'm a complete noob and would like to put FreeNAS, or similar, on a virtual server running Windows XP Pro x64.

What I would like to achieve is a ZFS file system for video storage.

Could someone point me to a Thread, Blog or Tutorial for doing this.

Little confused here. Is the physical box running XP pro? If so, do you really need to do that? If not, I'd not suggest virtualizing the file server, since your performance will not be very good. What are you actually trying to do?
 
I purchased a used Chenbro 20 bay rack server and moved my pc to it.

I want to have video storage on a budget using LSI 9211-8i and sas expander. This in combo with something like FreeNAS would not break my fragile bank.

I'm now disabled and living on Social Security. So any budget solution that maximizes the volume of data capacity you can suggest for storage with some kind of fault tolerance would be great.
 
XP is my main OS. It is installed on a SSD. I have two 2tb data drives that are full.

I read that ZFS can be built in pools using RaidZ arrays. I would make one 4 drive array and then add more 4 drive array's over time.
 
With such a case I would make it into a dedicated storage box, build/buy another machine for XP.
 
What are you doing with XP though? What I am getting at: unless you are doing hardcore gaming graphics heavy stuff, a good box should be able to virtualize XP to give you perfectly acceptable performance.

Yea, I have a backup machine that is not being used and I installed FreeNAS for test of hardware and it worked fine.

I was hoping to just put it on a Virtual PC 2007 Guest and use just one machine instead of two.

My main PC is way under-utilized. I mainly use it for surfing and Video watching on a second display.

I don't know how to install a BSD program on Virtual PC and access the virtual disks.

(I'm probably way over my head and should just use Hardware Raid).:eek:
