I am looking at either building a freenas box or getting a Western Digital EX2. The main purpose of it will be file storage for my windows machines, but I also wanted to create a share for Time Machine backups. Could I have both on the same NAS?
 
6-8tb, nothing huge.

Basically just want it for 3 things.
1- Host my windows media files (movies, music, pictures) and be a dump for misc small files I want to back up.
2- Use as a back up point for 2 macbook pros using Time Machine (1 500gb, and 1 128gb)
3- Plex transcoding for 720 and 1080p mpeg4 streaming.
