NAS Backup.

I am after some advice, I have just purchased an 405160-B21 HP P400 SAS CONTROLLER 256MB CACHE for a NAS backup server to use with WHS.

The hardware that I am putting together is as follows:

ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AMD 760G Socket AM3 Motherboard
Kingston 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3 1333MHz i5 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V
AMD Athlon II X3 445 3.1 GHz - Socket AM3 1.5 MB cache Retail Box Processor

Will the HP P400 Controller work well with the above hardware? will I be able to use the Controller as an HBA only with Windows Home Server?

I am not intending to use any king of harware or software RAID to maximise on HDD space seeing this NAS is going to be used as a backup for my current NAS.

Lastly will I need the battery backup kit for the HP P400 to work well or is this only required if this is used as RAID Conntroller?

The battery is there to keep the data on the cache in-case of a power outage.
So if you plan on using write-back cache and you want to be as safe as can be then i would recommend the battery.


You will also need the battery and cache for the following functions:
- Online Capacity Expansion (OCE)
- RAID 6
- RAID migration
- RAID stripe size migration

I ended up buying a Lsi 3444e ill be starting a thread on it as it apparently is finicky
