I play CAL for BF2 and sound positioning is paramount. Right now im using my ksc-75. I just ran over some enemy spec ops in reverse cus i heard him a mile away. i was alone capping a flag.

right now with my portables i can tell if its front, back, left or right but id like to take it further and have it be able to do diagonally like the 4&8 o'clock positions as well. Id be nice if it could tell vertically as well to dectect ppl shooting from rooftops.

id also like nice detail. not as important as sound positioning because all you really need is an audio 'cue' to raise alertness. however id be nice to be able to differentiate sounds in heavy fire fights so you can hear the c4 being planted on your tank hull or that grenade that just landed at your feet.

looking at hd555,hd580, MDR-v6, DT-770,ATH-A500

Well, to narrow it down further, do you have a prefernece one way or another on closed vs open?

rap,rock,r&b,techno in that order

but i really dont care about music at this point, i have my ksc-75 satisfy me enough. I also have some senn hd201 coming in as well.

the ath-a500 or the dt770 would be the best match. For gaming i would say the dt770 would fit best due to more pronounced lows; but they are also harder to drive correctly. If you havn't had the cmoy built yet, i'd almost ask misterx personally which would match the amp better (or modify amp a bit to match cans...? )

Never heard the ATH-500, but out of the rest the DT770's would be my choice. I prefer the beyer sound for my music preferences, and for FPS games my dt990 (similar to 770, just open basically) does a very good job. You may not have the same preferences as me, so if you can get a chance to listen to them before hand, do it!

In the end, your sound is limited by how good the game is, although now most current games are decent for positioning.

On a side note, if you do get a high quality headphone, can you keep us posted how you think the positioning is compared to your KOSS's?

~Hope this helps

beyers will probably be your best bet especially if your playing fps games. They have great soundstage.
