Nano-ITX Touchscreen Fan Control

Idea: 7" LCD touch screen on the front of the computer. The touch screen would be hooked up to a mini ITX board with a 1GHz VIA processor. The ITX's "harddrive" could be a 1GB USB thumb drive. The screen would then allow you to control and monitor various functions of your computer.

A simple GUI would let you use sliders to control the speed of all the fans in your rig. Additionally you could hook the little system up to the actual computer and send it content, install new programs on it and so on.

Imagine having a simple tabbed interface for all this; a tab for fan control, a tab for folding stats, a tab for media visualizations or streamed video or a tab for anything else.

For the main board, I'd probably use the VIA EPIA NL-5000E Nano-ITX. I haven't found a touchscreen LCD that I like yet. As for the OS, I'm thinking ZipSlack with an X-Server or maybe even Windows 98SE. The GUI wouldn't be too difficult to program.

For fan control, I could pick apart a Sunbeam Theta Software Fan Controller TP101. Instead of wasting a PCI slot, I could mount this board right over (or under) the Mini ITX.

(a buddy from another forums and I came up with this idea, we're gonna try it out)

Gotta love over-engineering. A simple knob would do, but instead a whole complete computer with monitor to do it. Do you work for the government?

Actuially... Yes, yes i do!
well then, because you have mad money, I suggest that you rip the fan controller out of a MGE Quantum case. 7 fans and 4 temp monitors . Not as many as yours (I think), but the area where the fans plug into is seperate from the actual monitoring display. Would allow for more flexibility in where you put stuff I think...

is the fan control USB tho? I need to be able to access it from windows.

ahh...good call...i wasn't thinking of that.

no it's completely seperated from any windows control....

your idea sounds much smarter now :p

I amost did the exact asme thing with my water chiller! Though it was also going to be a server, it's man purpose was going to be controling the chiller and it's fans along with the comptuer and all of it's fans.

Only made it past the late design/getting ready to purchace stages though, because I realized I'd rather just put a comp in my car for a little bit more $$$ then doing this to my chiller...

If oyu have the screen (the expensive part) go for it! I'd love to se some one actually do this.

Hah! Good call. :p $500 to control some fans?? Money says you'll never go through with it.

In the off chance you do, I would at least look for an s370 SBC card and a used Lilliput to save a few hundred dollars on this project.
