Question for you folks.. I have an opportunity to buy several servers for a good price and know what most of them are. There's one crazy retro-looking server (should say cabinet) with an IBM label on it. Google has failed me, anyone have any idea what this thing might be?

Must admit, it has a cool look to it. As a scale reference: it's about 4ft tall.

Unfortunately just IBM. I couldn't get to the back of it, and how to open it is less than intuitive.

I'll probably pass, but just figuring it out is killing me. I'll eyeball it again tomorrow and post learnings.

Looks like it could be an AS400 (about that size), but without more information theres no way to be certain.

I would name it Firebat
All my servers are named after computer game units

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's an AS/400. They did make some of them that size, but they were usually fairly blocky, the rear was curved outward and the face. especially the larger ones. I've never seen one with a red vented front like that, though some do have some red parts on the face of the machine.

It's been about 8 years since I've been an AS/400 guy, I just don't recall ever seeing one that looked like that.

Yea i agree but they made so many different models that I have seen all kinds. I dont know any other IBM system that would be close to that. Systems 32/36/38 were all WAY larger and the Power Series (successor to AS400 dont look like that) too small for a z/os system.

ill be honest i have no idea what it is.

So, I had hoped to come back today and reveal the mystery - I think I can partially but not conclusively.

So, this is at an auction and there's no seller to ask questions of. The case did roll out quite easily but from the back there was no visibility of what was inside. And I still couldn't figure out how to open the front without getting forceful. The back panel had a nice power status panel with a few buttons on it, but nothing in the rear that looked like a part number. Only one number I found: P21H7507. Oddly on top of it were slightly smaller black/red louvered panels like in the picture. I guess once you get in the core case, you'd want to wrap the servers in an additional layer of retro.

I brought a camera - but my daughters had stolen the SD card from it. Ugh.

Here's the only useful info.. Wrapped up right next to it were two AS/400's. So, looks like you guys were correct. If someone here has an itch for this, I'll buy it just for curiosity purposes.

Otherwise, if anyone knows of a good use for 25 EMC Clariion CX DAE2's loaded with about (25 x 15 = 375) 146gb drives let me know - tempted on that.
