Ok im tyring to configure sendmail to send out my notifacations. First off i have no clue where to start. I do not want to make it relay through my smtp because if the smtp is down well then it wouldnt send. all i wanna do is make it so that when an alert goes off it will send me an email. any one wanna point me in the right direction. im running the nagios on ubuntu server 8. i can setup mta to relay the mail through my smtp but i would also need pointed where to start for that as well. in advance thanks.

The way email on Linux/Unix works, is that programs usually send email to a mini-mail server running on the local host, and then that mini-mail server will forward it to your real email server (this way, every program on the Linux machine won't need to be configured separately for email).

You say you don't want it to relay through your SMTP server, but how else would you get the email?

it would be fine if it relays on it self i do not want it to have to relay to another smtp server though i want the nagios box to be solely dependent on itself. ok all in all i dont want it to have to bounce like off of a gmail server or something all though it might have to im not sure
