i was considering setting up another mobo and associated gear to test out my lastest phase change box so I promptly checked the good ole refurb section to see what they had in stock and to do the usual price checking.

whoa.

wtf happened?? the refurbs used to be a decent deal but now they are fricken high for what you are getting.

example:
NF7-s refurb - 15 day warranty, OEM, no guarantee on what parts you will get, $77 +$3 s&h = $80

NF7-S, NEW, full warranty, all parts included, $100.00 + $5 s&h = $105

$25 less gets you a 15 day warranty and no guarantee on what accessories will be included? not to mention the fact that the last few mobos I tried from their refurb section were DOA and all I got out of it was screwed on return shipping. It used to be worth the risk as you could sometimes get a good board for $40 or more cheaper than the retail versions (sometimes even as much as 1/2 price) but not anymore.

so much for that shat. :p

dud3 g3t away from t3h l33t sp34k.

I've never really believed in refurb parts, they tend to suck in the beginning (thus the reason they were returned) and they suck more after all the manhandling.

screw that, just look for sales instead, always better

that, and the refurb section is going to change alot, since it is going to depend on the condition the board was returned as

it used to be that you could get some damn good mobos out of the refurbage. many of them seemed to be nothing more or less than returns from nubs that didnt know how to line out their fricken BIOS settings. I got one NF7 (rev 1.2) that was apparently never even taken out of the box. that has been several months back though.

I have purchased several refurbed mobos for backup systems & they all worked perfectly fine. ;) About 2 1/2 mos. ago I got a refurbed a7n8x Del. rev 2.0 for $59 (Free S&H, which is $3, btw). It works fine, as a matter of fact I'm typing this on it right this moment (an AIUHB 2100 @ 2.3ghz on air, no vmods). Asus was kind enough to send the I/O shield & I have the option to buy the accessory pack for $20. Not a bad deal & it has passed all the benchies/ stress testing I've throw @ it, including P95.
I always kinda felt that most of the parts were sent bak due to some n00b not having a clue how to put together a system---prolly far more of that than actual dead components. BUT, w/ the new pricing structure for refurbs, Newegg needs to, @ least, test the refurbed parts (which they supposedly don't do) to verify that they are, indeed, functional & they need to up the warranty a tad. Otherwise buying a refurb w/ a 15 day warranty to save circa $15-20 is insane...'least IMHO.

I would never buy a refurbed mobo. Mobos and HDDs have the highest death rates of any other PC part, and I have no problem dishing out 20 bucks extra on a brand new part that I know I can RMA if it dies. The only parts I'd get refurbed is stuff that doesn't really break, like cases, or speakers, or other stuff that isn't critical to my computers stability.

What? No sense of adventure.... Actually I don't buy them for any of my main rigs nor anything that I would consider mission critical. That being said motherboards don't break, insofar as they're solid state w/ no moving parts other than maybe a fan on the chipset. Idk what they teach ppl these days as far as tech repair goes, but I've always been under the impression that for solid state parts the 1st 72 hours is when most failures will occur. That's why I test any refurbed (or new) components that I purchase w/ a battery of benchs &/or burn-in progs designed to point out any potential failures. For memory modules I use MemTest86 & the extended tests of Windows Memory Diagnostics. For mobos/cpu and overall system stability I use Hexus PiFast, SuperPI, CPU Burn and Prime95. If it's a graphics card I let 3dMark01 loop for ~24hrs. Out of 5 refurbed mobos I've purchased, 5 are still going fine (2 Abit kx7r's, 1 AT7 Max, an Asus a7n8x & an a7n8x del). I've also bought a Seagate 80gig SATA drive (which got the Seagate hdd diagnostic) & a HighTech ATI vid card. I am using the latter 2 "refurbed" components w/ the refurbed a7n8x del. as I type this & have been for about 2 1/2 mos. now. This refurbed backup system has served me well, as my purchased new Connect3d 9600XT recently failed on me...maybe I shoulda bought it refurbed??? :p
The point is that if you wanna save a few $$'s and like to play w/ a lot of different stuff Newegg refurbs are (were?) fantastic. My a7n8x was close to 1/2 the price of the new asus board @ the time. Now w/ the increased prices on refurbs coupled w/ the $3 S&H it is not @ all worth the risk. There's no way I will bite w/ only a savings of ~$20.

yeah, thier refurbs went up alot... I was gonna buy a A7N8X-DLX refrub for $60, but i looked at it later, and it was 89$

Mobos die often because they are a collection of a ton of cheap parts. One cap goes bad, poof. One resistor, poof. One short due to poor cleaning of the paste, poof.

I got one for $59 & it's fine so far. If one cap goes poof, o well... ;) So far the only parts I have had die on my were purchased new---that shows how my luck goes. H311, the 9600XT wasn't oc'ed @ all---basically b/c it was pretty much running @ max already, esp. the craptacular Samsung 3.3ns ram Connect3d chose to place on my card. I see your point about purchasing refurb parts---if it's your only system or w/e I would say stay away. Right now I have 5 systems, actually 4 b/c one is video cardless @ the moment. 3 of these are based on refurbs. One is for my 10 yr old daughter and her friends to abuse & the other 2 are just for fun...and b/c I had open spots on my router (w/ one getting i'net via the a7n8x del's 3Com NI). If any die I'm not gonna be losing any sleep. But 2 outta the 3 have been going for nye on a yr...if that cap's gonna go poof it'd better hurry cuz soon the XP's will be phased out in favor of the a64. :D

that is exactly what I am talking about - they just slapped on a $30 bump in the price tag without increasing the warranty, telling you the extra parts would be there or anything else.

they are prolly just testing supply and demand. my response = so much for the demand part of the equation. ;)

I got my built by ati 9600xt for 125 bucks (retail box) from newegg. If that isn't a deal, i don't know what is... :D

I'm so bummed. Now the prices are completely whacked. Even the shipping on the refurb stuff has gone up. For the most part, refurb shipping used to be free. Also, I have noticed another thing. My uncle told me a little trick to check stock on items. You add the item to your cart and set the quantity to 99. Once you update, the quantity will be the number they have in stock. (Unless they have more than 99.) I checked the quantity on Abit AN7s in the refurb section about two weeks ago. They had 32. A week later they had about 42. (Shows you how fast the refurb stuff is selling now.) All of a sudden, it only shows 2 in stock. It's been this way for several days now. I think they've done something to prevent you from checking stock.

I agree with weapon--. They're probably just testing the waters to see if people keep buying. Also, I think they're getting bigger and maybe a little cocky. It may be the end of a era...

For the record, every refurb item I've purchased has worked perfectly. Here's a partial list:

$19 Shuttle AK32 - I bought 3 of these.
$29 Shuttle AK39N - Using it right now.
$35 Shuttle AK35GT2
$49 Shuttle MN31N - Received a $15 rebate from Shuttle. Total price=$34
$39 Aspire X-Dreamer case (Black) - Perfect condition

OK...I'm a Shuttle fan. Everything above had free shipping. Plus, I live close to newegg so everything comes next day. I've also bought a ton of new stuff from newegg. Come on newegg, snap out of it! :(

Shit, you guys are right. I agree with Atomic Dawg that we may be seeing the end of an era. A three dollar friggin' shipping fee now? Yeah, that's cheap no arguing there but it was free. *sigh*

And the prices aren't so attractive anymore. Newegg used to be kind of a Geek's best secret and along with Newegg's redesign they are screwing with perfection in my opinion.

I am glad I ordered my video card earlier this week before they instituted this crap. Really disappointing news from the egg... :(

They aren't going to charge less then what it cost them plus refurb cost, lower prices vs retail probably means less refurb was neccessary, though dono't hold me to that by any means. I'm just tlaking logic here.

But this is simple economics, they simply aren't goingt o charge you less then it cost them. In fact I'd presume that they are still making the same margins on refurb'd parts as new retail. Though given the economics of online hardware, thats probably still not saying much at all for their bottom line.

Like any computer store newegg relies on software and big ticket items (LCDs, Plasma Panels, DigiCams, etc) to make their bux. Most computer parts are a second line to keep customers coming back for the service and support. But everyone of you who is a follower of the Fry's Friday ad understands the loss leader, I'm sure.

Oh and one more thing, the plethora of 9700 Pro's for $179 shipped, from newegg or anyone else, whoops the shit outa the 9600 at $125 you got there.

Holy crap!! I went on the Egg to check what you guys are talking about, regarding the prices, and they did jack that crap up. I purchased a Refurbished IC7 for 75 shipped and taxed to Cali. Right now, the same refurb Mobo is selling for $105!!! That is a $30 dollars bump, wtf?!

After reading this article, I am very scared on how the motherboard will run. I am still waiting for a Hard Drive that I had purchased to arrive, so my system is set yet, hmmm...the worst part is that I'm on my 13th day...

Well that's more like it... :D I knew there had to be some in here that enjoyed the beauty of refurbs as it was. Personally, I never saw the point in this turning into a dissertation on the wisdom of buying refurbs, that wasn't the point. I believe all here are mature enuff to know the risks--h311 Newegg points it out in big, red, bold text. It boils down to the fact that if you wanna buy refurbs and take the subesquent risk, do so...if not then don't do it...that simple. ;) I chose to do so and now have 5 systems---all overclocked to 2.1ghz to 2.7ghz (all AMD). And is far as Newegg getting their money...well that 15% restocking fee prolly goes a long way towards profits. ;)
