n00b question regarding HSF

I could be wrong, but do some (all) motherboards not power up if they don't sense a three pin fan connected to the motherboard for the HSF?

I ask, because I noticed on one site for the Enermax UC-12FAB they reccomended using the 3>4 pin adapter because there was a risk that the power usage from the fan would fry the motherboard header (or even most fanbus's) with just three pin. If you did this, how would you get the computer to start?

nah its a bios option you can turn off. Usually it may beep at you if you have "alert if cpu fan is disabled" enabled in the bios. Turn it off.
 
Most motherboards today do not require you to use any 3 pin connector to plug up to the motherboard header. Most of them, I'd say around 95% these days do not even alarm if ia fan reading is not present, however, this has been replaced by an alarm to warn of CPU overheating, and yes, I would not hook up a high power fan to your motherboard headers. You can fry them. Reserve those for low power case fans...however, alot of fans out do have a sensor cable that can be attached to the header while having a 4 pin molex connector to attach to your PSU, and with this, the motherboard will still be able to monitor your CPU fan without risk of damage to the board itself.
