I have HDMI running into my monitor from my cable box and DVI running into my monitor from my computer. But I cannot remotely control the volume on the monitor speakers when I want to watch the cable box.

The monitor has an audio-out 3.5 mm jack on the side.

If I run a cable from this jack to the audio-in (mic) on my motherboard, can I continuously play the sound from the monitor using my computer (OS: Windows 7)?

I'm asking because I'm at work and cannot try till I get home, and was wondering if anyone had some advice. The monitor is a Viewsonic 27" VX2739WM.

If you use an audio out jack, you will generally disable the speaker output on the monitor, so i'm assuming you have a set if computer speakers hooked up to your computer, in which case, yes, you should be able to do what you are asking. Its not an ideal way as far as sound quality goes, but it would work.
