A few months ago my video card began overheating when I was playing World of Warcraft. It would freeze and the screen would become a multicolored pattern, and sometimes just restart. I monitored my temperature levels around 120 C. So I dusted my video card, got a GPU cooler and some more case fans. It didnt go above 100 C again. However, after a few weeks I'd still crash to the same kind of multicolored pattern, except it would recover after a few seconds and the game would keep running but with graphical issues, like spears of color coming down all over the place and moving around. Then one time it crashed, and i tried to turn it back on. It would power up but it wouldnt beep at all and the monitor would be blank. I was broke at the time so I just let it be and used my laptop for the time being. I recently got some money so i tried to start up my desktop again to see what would happen, and it turned on. It started up fine, but World of Warcraft crashes to a multicolored pattern for a few seconds then resumes with graphical errors like it used to, and my sound makes the static screeching for a few minutes. After that I can play a song in Winamp fine, but before then it won't even play. I tried to play another game, Hitman: Blood money, and it froze when I tried to alt tab. It just froze, no weird graphical errors or sound, and I couldnt do anything except a hard restart. If i had to guess, I'd say its my motherboard cuz my friend said MSI sucks.

specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Newcastle 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor
GeForce 6800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card
APEX AL-B450E ATX 450W Power Supply
CORSAIR XMS 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
MSI K8T NEO2-F 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy ES SB0162 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card

I'd say the graphics card is on its last legs.
You have overheated it too often and now it is damaged.
I have a Ti 4200 card that behaves in exactly the same way.

Dont run a graphics card at 100C, let alone 120C, it will age a lot faster.
I dont let mine hit 80C.

hmm what about when it wouldnt even beep for a while? and the sound problems after video crashes? im thinking ill get a new motherboard with pci express slots, a new video card, and probably a gig more of ram. will that + reformatting take care of everything?

If you overload the PSU with a faulty component I would expect your system to act strange.

If you want an excuse to upgrade, I think this is it :)

hooray for excuses
thanks a lot

do you think i could underclock my video card for the time being to squeeze out a few more weeks?
