My X800XL Overclocking Experience

Okay so the stock for my X800XL was 400/490. After doing some overclocking (Mem Test and Core Test for 5 hours each) my final Overclock came to ve 432/562. My video card was purchased from Newegg and was a Refurbished Rosewill, I have a Zalman cu700 slapped onto it with Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste. I actually saw a 10FPS increase in CSS and HL2 at 1024x768 with all settings on high with AA and AF maxed out. I was kind of wondering if anyone else had high overclocking like that? Or is that even high. Personally, considering I've heard that the X800XL is a really crappy Overclocker, I thought what I got was fairly generous.
 
I pretty much got the same speeds with my X800XL. The max stable core was 435 without artifacts, idling at 34c with the stock heatsink. Memory speeds at 555 though.
 
I'd say thats a pretty mediocre core clock and a fairly good mem clock. With RAMsinks installed you may even be able to go higher.

I wonder how your OC'ed X800 XL matches up against a stock X800 XT?
 
im at 450/1080, with 0 artifacts, and i think i can go higher
when i do max core/mem testing it just keeps going up and up
 
I have the Ati Card.

I got 450/550 all day long, stock cooler, using Ati tool to OC and fan control with very agreesive fan speeds ( 100% @ 50C )
 
BTW the Ram on my card has a curved metal heatsink on the back side of the card that serves to sink the back board ram, and I have a 80mm fan blowing in right on the card. So the card already has ram sinking stock out of the box.
 
Got mine at 466/587.

Though I know I can get the mem way higher with a decent power supply.

The core is pathetic to overclock. Even at volt modded to 1.9 volts (default is 1.35) it still can barely reach 486 (and this is with a decent waterblock and massive car radiator). Also, if I do that, it massively kills the mem overclock so I have to back down the voltage. Right now it's at 1.4. At stock it'll do 459mhz tops dead stable.

The mem is good though. Keep it cool with meaty heatsinks and with a good psu, you can take it into 600mhz easy.


I think alot of the moaning and groaning at this cards comes from ex 9800pro owners like myself who were able to relatively easier reach over 500mhz on a core that's default was about 380mhz. So yeah, compare an x800xl to that, and you can see why overclockers have been very dissapointed with it.
 
Got a good vMod guide for that card?

I've got an ATI Silencer Rev.5 on the way, and am worried that it might interfere with some of the solder points.

If you do it right you won't. I have AS5 on mine. (as in JUST put it on the actual core don't slap it all over the chip like some idiots I've seen)
 
Ummm...obviously (RE: AS5). I was more thinking the lines going to the voltage regulators on the back of the card.

You've SEEN the size of the ramsink on the back, right? It covers an ENORMOUS area.

Anyway, I usually put a vapor-thin layer of AS5 on the core with the Silencers, then use the included thermal goop to slather all over the ram chips (since it almost never sits perfectly even on ALL of them, and I'd hardly want to use conductive AS5 on them if any squishes out on the chips thay it DOES make great contact with).
