Is there really such a thing as overkill on a single card setup?

I'd go with the Gigabyte card that computersmakemeQQ and MacLeod suggested. It's a great card that matches performance (beats it by ~1FPS in games, nothing crucial at all) and will run quieter and cooler due to its design.

At least, that's what I gathered from the Hardware Canucks review.

Agreed. Nope.

The only point a card becomes overkill is when it will average over 60 fps on your resolution with any game on the market maxed out. Right now, a 7970 or GTX680 would be just right for me at 1920x1080 as both of those would average near 60 fps in Crysis and Metro at full max settings. So until you hit 61 fps average, youre not in the overkill territory. And if you have a 120 Hz monitor, then youre never going to have to worry about overkill.

Ahhhh i see what you did there :p I dont know why i didnt think of that lol But the one you just posted in like 70$ more than the one i originally was going with, even though they are the same. For that price, id rather spend $10 more on NE and get a GTX 670

Same as what MacLeod said.

So this is the same as what i was looking for, just slightly better? Also, DoomDoomDoom, that URL is broken. I trid to fix the / before forum/hard..... and it didnt fix it. :(

Nope, but there IS such a thing as running out of money

So, should i go with:

GIGABYTE GV-R795WF3-3GD Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5

or

EVGA GTX 670

Gigabyte GTX 670

The gigabyte 7950 has more VRAM and a higher 384-bit count. Not terribly sure what the bit count does. Would the 7950 be better than the GTX 670?

So, you recommend the Gigabyte, but why?

Still trying to decide which 670 to go with....

The Gigabyte is slightly quieter. Other than that, they both do pretty good cooling and carry a 3-year transferable warranty. They're both pretty solid choices.

EDIT: Er, my mistake. I thought we were still just talking about 7950s. With 670s, the Gigabytes are considerably quieter (but EVGA's not loud by any measure, it's simply a matter of very quiet vs. very very quiet), and again, 3-year transferable warranty. I would say that at the same price point, 670 wins by a small margin, but that small margin does not justify the some $80-$100 difference between 670 and 7950. (Also the reason why I have a 7950 right now after returning my 670)

Ive kind of decided to re-invest some case money and other money into my GPU so i wanted to go with a 670. The EVGA and Gigabyte are both good options? Still not sure :p

Honestly, you can find 670's fairly cheap on these forums if you look. I the ASUS GTX DCUii 670 TOP (arguably one of the best 670's around along with msi counterpart) for $380 - so I would look around at these forums before considering buying new.

I have 2 GTX 670 FTW's in SLI and love them. Right now it's overkill, but i'll fix that eventually. :)

Another vote for 670
