I cant play any games without some serious lag. first i thought it was overheating, so i put a HUGE fan next to it. now i dont know what the problem is.
what happens is in every game it will lag every min or so, and lag for about 20 secs... this seems to be happening in EVERY game. i just bought doom3 and it was completely unplayable.
its a geforce4 4200 by PNY. please advise, i've already contacted PNY and am waiting for a reply, but nothing yet.

Have you added any periferals lately such as a palm pilot or scanner, they sometimes have a utility that runs in the background that continously looks for the devices which can screw up games. Go into task manager and watch the cpu usage for a while, see if it continually changes every minute or so, and see which process is using the cycles. You could also have a browser hijacker or spyware causing it.

I'm assuming you oc your 4200. What is it clocked at. What det driver? what are some of your other system specs? Kinda like trying to do a physical on someone over the phone here.

I do not, nor have i ever overclocked my video card, or processor.
a visual inspection of the card looks fine, the fan on it seems to work fine also...

Doom3, UT2k4, Raven shield.
In UT and RS it would just lockup every minuite or so. in Doom3 it would lockup, then all lighting would be gone (i can still see lighting flares and screens)
I have 1gb of ram. intel P4 2.5 on D865PERL

At this point a software (driver) issue can not be ruled out.

yea i was thinking that... but i did a hard drive format and installed all the newest drivers to try and rule that out. but i got the same problem.
i really think something is wrong with the card.
I changed the rendering path in Doom3 from NV20 to NV10 and now i am able to play it ,but it still lags every 10 minuites or so.
i'm not running rivatuner or anything like that also.

hmm you sure it isn't a GF4 MX? Also, make sure Fast Writes in the BIOS is disabled. What res are you playing Doom III at. I have a GF4 Ti4600 (slightly faster than your 4200) and it can be playable at 800x600 Medium Quality but no higher than that.

hmm, i'll check the fast writes thing, thanks. and gf4mx, hahaha. i guess they just mislabeled the box, the card, and accidentally put the wrong bios in it.

Some tips with PNY

Keep at it. I had a 4200 die a couple months back myself. They did not respond for like a week. I kept firing off e-mails however until I got a response. Keep at it

They sent me a fx 5600 Ultra that I put in my server

they just sent me a reply saying to call tech support. hopefully i'll get through and have them RMA it. the card is really borked but i guess they don't understand my explainations.
