OK, so I just installed SuSe 10 and everything installed ok.
I have a couple of problems though.
1. the network doesnt work at all. Are there any specific settings i'm supposed to use.
2. how can I disable the GRUB bootloader and use xp's, as I prefer it.

Specs:
3700+
DFI Ultra-D
1 Gig of xms at 3-3-3-8

WD 250 gig SATA II 16 meg cache

1. We need a bit more information here. Is your network card detected(if not, what network card are you using)? Do you get an IP address(if using DHCP)?
2. You'll have to reinstall windows's bootloader(fixmbr from the recovery console should do it, I believe). However, getting ntldr to boot linux is a bit more work than getting grub to boot windows. A bit of googling should turn up the proper way to get windows's bootloader to boot linux, though.

Yeah, both ports are. I'm using the two integrated ones on the mobo.I don't get an IP address (i think) I can't even connect to my router...

Would It be easier to have GRUB load Windows as the defualt?
I don't really care how it's done, I just want windows to be loaded by default.

WRT network, try "dhclient eth0" or "dhcpcd eth0" or "pump eth0"; one of those should get you an IP address. Run "ifconfig eth0" to see what address it gets:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:01:29:50:1B:0A
          inet addr:[color=red]192.168.10.100[/color] Bcast:192.168.10.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:18005084 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:13262017 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:1474987039 (1406.6 Mb) TX bytes:2344674847 (2236.0 Mb)
          Base address:0x9000 Memory:fa000000-fa020000
To have GRUB load windows, add an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst like this:
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
boot

This assumes that you've got windows on the second drive. If it's (for example) the third partition on the first drive, change it to "rootnoverify (hd0,2)".

If it doesn't boot when you do this (likely if you've got it on a secondary drive) add two lines:
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
where hd0 is your linux drive and hd1 is your windows drive.

HTH

We're not even sure his kernel found his ethernet card.

In console mode as Root, do a "lspci -v" and look for the ethernet controllers. Once you identify the hardware for them, make sure you have the module loaded that supports those cards. Google the chipset and determine the module to use. To see if you have that module loaded, perform the "lsmosd" command and look for that module. If not loaded, do a "modprobe <modulename from the google search>"

Then try unhappy's network steps.

As for Grub vs Windows bootloader, GRUB all the way. Just edit your menu.lst file to tell grub to make the windows the default.

I just tried to load into linux and I got an error the X couldn't start. I know enough about linux to know that that is a bad thing.

Well I reinstalled then did a little fiddeling around and now the internet works :)

But, I'm running GNOME and the whole computer seems really slow and the internet takes forever to load.

dude don't use XP's bootloader. Even if you prefer it. Not only will you eventually prefer GRUB, but using Microsofts is asking for disaster. Microsoft does not really play nice with others and sooner or later its going to hand you the shaft and you'll be unable to boot to anything non windows until you load up with a live CD and reinstall grub to the MBR.
