My Speakers won't work

It is a set of logitech z560 5.1 surround sound speakers. I am using an Asus P8z68 mobo with onboard sound.

I removed my speakers from the jacks to check somethng within the chassis, and when I reconnected it I only get sound in Diablo 3 and when I use the 'test' functionality in the audio configuration in the right click menu on the realtech device in sound manager. Other than that - no sound. Firefox, itunes, my rhapsody music player nada.

I dont believe it is a hardware problem as the sound works fine in D3 and in the device manager configuration. I don't know what to do I fiddled with al settings/uninstalling drivers.

I do have an Nvidea graphics card with sound capabilities. In device manager it lists 1 copy of Realtech Audio Device and 5 (yes 5) copies of Nvidea sound controller. Enabling or disabling them doesnt make a difference.

any help is greatly appreciated.
 
Go into diablo 3 and see what device its using for sound(also if its analog or digital), that should narrow your search area. It could be that for some reason the onboard audio switched to analog or digital(I.e the opposite of what was plugged in) when the cables were removed. I don't have diablo but I remember in WoW it would keep your audio settings regardless of what windows was set to.

Also the onboard sound certainly has drivers. If asus doesn't have them, realtech will for that sound chip. Just find your specific model on asus' or newegg's website and it should list the audio chipset model number in the detail spec section - 887, 889, or 892
 
I just assumed it would be like WoW, where you can change it, since they are both Blizzard games. Guess I assumed wrong.

After some more digging it looks there is a bug in D3 where apparently it doesn't use your system settings for sound. Though it appears to mostly affect macs maybe it hit you too. That could explain why D3 still has sound output but everything else doesn't, it didn't pick up the "changed" settings that occurred after unplugging the speakers. It also appears that while both WoW and SC2 have a setting where you can change the audio device, D3 does not and many people aren't happy about it. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4926863828?page=1

Further more are you sure you have the z560s? I had them back in the early 2000s and I'm pretty sure they weren't a 5.1 set. I assume they are connected to the 3.5mm analog speaker ports?

I'm taking another leap of faith here but I think somehow all your sounds got switch to the video card. You hear sound in the Realtech device because its sending the signal strait to the ports on the back and in D3 because it still has the original settings because of the bug. Try uninstalling all the Nvidia drivers, reboot, and then see if sound works again.

re-installing nvidea drivers worked. it looks like it was a problem with nvidea. Also, u are right. Z506 not 560 :p
 
well it wont work again. now i get sound when I test it, it uses my monitor as a center speaker which I don't have plugged into my 5.1 because I don't really have space. I dont want this and I don't know how to disable it. it doesn't work with d3 either now. It seems every time I restart it comes up with some new problem. How do I fix this shit?

Simple fix, Stop using onboard audio. I had similiar issues back when I used a board with a VIA sound chipset, switched to a Live! 24bit PCI, then moved to a Fatal1ty, then finally to a Xonar, never once had an issue again.
