Hi. I just want to let you know what i have here.
Bought a desktop recently and for sound i got a Asus Xonar DG Sound Card with 2.1 Speakers Edifier M3280BT and i'm very pleased with both.
There isn´t much online about these speakers except maybe a few (favorable) user reviews in the German Amazon

I use them mostly to ear music and they have a crisp sound.
They are great, for the price, i think. The Bluetooth i find it useless though.
I wonder if something like an Essence Card would do much difference from the DG.


Just wanted to show you what i consider a good alternative in not too expensive 2.1 speakers (Used the forum search and found zero references)
Maybe someone here will try them too.
They are pretty big.

Higher quality amplifiers (to boost the sound going to your DG and therefore speakers) and higher quality sound card (there are many to choose from really depends on how much you want to spend) will drive the speakers better for sure, but if you are"happy" with the sound, is that not all that matters :)
 
I've just discovered foobar today.
Now i have two equalizer tools, one from the Xonar and the other with foobar.
Does it make sense to use two equalizers simultaneously?
Or should i use one over the other? (until now xonar equalizing really has been making a difference).
Also foobar has a preamp tool that allowed the volume from my speakers to go up a bit, it's well noticeable. I'm quite happy with it.
Any thoughts on this?
 
You shouldn't be using equalizers at all unless it's for correcting some bump in the bass end. That setup looks to be designed more for looks and less for sound so most likely no amount of eq is going to make it sound good unfortunately.

For the sound card, at least.
Sound is much better with the sound tweaked in the Audio Center.
I tweaked the equalizer to what sounded good to me and after that i googled for xonar equalizer setups and found some almost identical to the one i had come to.
In Xonar Audio Center there's a preset called S-Rock and the best sound is somewhere near the values of that preset.
Far better from the all zero values set in the equalizer by default.

Well obviously you're not interested in hi-fi then. But your speaker choice already was an indication of that.

I can see only 1 reason to run 2 EQs. You could use the Xonar's to deal with speaker & room problems, then add Foobar's for recording issues as needed. End result should match using just 1 EQ, but it can be a lot easier to deal with. Especially because the Xonar's EQ works for all software.

It's important not to clip digital signals, so be sure you understand the "auto level" button in Foobar's EQ. You'll need to do the same thing in the Xonar's panel, if you boost any bands there.

Probably not too useful, except for unusually quiet recordings. Again, you do not want to push the digital signal above -0dBFS.

Replaygain might work well for you, and Foobar offers options which prevent clipping.

There are a lot of variables in play, so feel free to experiment. Speakers are almost certainly your weak link, and EQ's potential outweighs its disadvantages here.

If you are going to use an EQ, only use one, the one that causes least distortion (that means least reduction in detail).
This would be the one in Foobar.

I recommend installing the WASAPI plugin as when enabled, it stops the Windows sound system resampling and reducing quality.
The Foobar EQ will still work with this enabled.

For EQ I use the Electri-q Posihfopit edition (free edition) in Foobar.
This is an incredible EQ for quality and features.

You dont need to use the economy mode with modern CPUs.
Its complex, best read up on its use.
You can no longer buy the full version because the writer closed shop.
The free version is well featured but doesnt allow multiple saved settings.

Sorry what I posted is a fact. You cannot achieve good sound using bad components and then using a chain of eq:s in attempt to repair the damage the components have done to the sound.

The correct approach is to disable all EQ and get source + speakers that are able to produce authentic sound in a room. That's a tall order.
