My SLI debate

Purchased my new build in April 15 with the original intent to SLI my MSI GTX 970. With the new 980Ti coming out, I have no reconsidered what would be the best option for me. I do not plan on running 4k anytime soon. Next upgrade this year would probably be to 1440p.

1.) Sell my existing 970, hoping to get maximum dollar and purchase a single 980ti.

2.) Buy a second 970 to SLI and hope that games coming up this year will take advantage of DX 12. I know DX12 is still an unknown at this point as to who will or won't take advantage - I'm looking at the probability.

In 1440p, would both the 970's in SLI and the 980Ti be overkill for most settings? If that is the case, it would make sense right now to go with the cheaper option. If the SLI will struggle at MAX settings, but the 980Ti will handle it just fine, I will go with the 980Ti.

Constructive opinions are welcome!

980 TI has been out for a while now, but yes single card over sli/cf is always preferred do to drivers and other issues. If you could get a second 970 for super cheap used or something maybe, but single card is preferred.

Are you having issues iwth egames now?

No issues with the games, but I know some that are coming out are going to require a little extra to run at high settings. I am thinking right now it will cost me a lot in the end to do a full switch to a single 980ti vs adding another 970 card.

Curious mostly about the performance at 1440p.

980TI all the way.. it will offer 100% performance all the time, as mentioned above you avoid SLI issues, SLI scaling etc.. and even, generally speaking a overclocked 980TI can outperform a 970SLI setup..

I see your point in terms of performance, but im speaking from a Price/Performance standpoint. I will only get around $300 for my 970 and a 980ti will cost me close to $1000 here in Canada. Thats a $700 difference. A single 970 can be had for $400 with a savings of $300 for later down the road. If the performance in 1440p isn't going to matter between the two, it makes sense for the 970 SLI setup IMO.

yes I understand the price, but also you should take into consideration the vRAM issue of the 970s. and for sure you will have a lot of horsepower with those 970s that will be certainly limited by the vRAM in some games.. issue that I think will just increase over time with more and more games using more and more vRAM that will cause heavy Stuttering, I think its really a waste of money have all that horsepower and still have to turn down some game settings to keep vRAM usage below 3.5gb. that's just sad. the 980TI have a higher price yet, but you will have a much better gaming experience.

A single 980ti is about the perfect fit for a 1440p/1600p screen. You can completely max out just about anything at 60hz.

That said even a 970 does very good on 1440p.

But if you're on the fence with SLI, go for the single better card.

Thanks for the replies. Do you think that the VRAM issue will still come into play with DirectX 12? Also, on the note of the 980ti, which model would you guys recommend? I originally wanted the Asus sticks, but that sold out everywhere.

I'm running 1 970 on a Predator 1440p G Sync monitor, and it's not enough to keep the settings high enough at the framerates I want to play at.

I too had the same quandary about selling my 970 or SLI'ing it. Since I found another 970 for 250, I went that route. Card will be here Tuesday. From what I saw, the vram issue is rare unless you're doing super high textures or mad levels of DSR.

Anyway, we'll see next week how it goes.
