Just wanted to confirm, i am pretty sure but could be wrong.

i often post slashdot news as some people may not go there or i think it may make good discussion, so i post it here, some people dont like i post it and just say go to slashdot, but some people like to come to [H] for news :)

now a person was kind to IM me and told me it could be copyright infringment, but i am posting the entire story as in their newsletter, no editing, no modifications, naddaaaaa

becaue i am posting all content with no modifications, would this be a legal issue?

i jst dont want H or myself to get in trouble...
 
As long as your giving credit to the author by posting a link to the original work, I would think you're alright. I'd wait for a Mod or Admin response to be absolutely sure.
 
it shouldbe no different than any other news site that shows someone elses work... [H] dose it all the time, the key is to make sure you have it sourced (provide a link) that link should give credit to the orriginal author... if it dosent, its that sites fault, not yours.
 
articles are hosted on websites, and those websites contain ads, and those ads pay for the websites, and the contents creators of the websites.

posting the entire article interupts the ability of those who wrote the article to make money.

thats why you post snipets and interest your viewers to go to the original content creators.

take for example a site like slashdot.
alot of the stories there are not from slashdot, but slashdot viewers think other slashdot viewers would like to read them, so they post an inticing piece of the story and a link to the entire article.

it is a sort of net symbiosis:
slashdot has visitors looking for the best of the best>and then>the original creators get advertising revenue from increased traffic.

everyone is happy. when you post the entire article, it breaks the revenue relationship from the "news aggrigate" site to the content creators.

while a snipet of an article can be just as bad as posting the entire article from a copywrite legal stand point. most smaller websites appreciate the increased revenue from making it to the front page of digg or slashdot or fark.


so dont post entire articles, feel free to post pieces of the articles, and its ok to make changes (use [[ ]]s) to make the clip more comprehensable. and realize that you are basically advertizing for the source website to a community that has your similar interests.

and dont break the net symbiosis

Net Symbiosis:
referring to the symbiotic relationship between an aggregate site (with many users looking for content) and smaller websites who are sustained by the revenue-increasing traffic.



as opposed to all the refences to spam spam and spam. or maybe!... net parasites? :D
 
so from now on i am best to post the title, less detail, and the link to the rest on slash :) intead of posting the whole email content which is often there whole story :)
 
The actual forum rules state:

(14) Do not post MATERIAL where you do not have permission to distribute it electronically or otherwise. This includes posting images directly from a website (Bandwidth Theft) Images are to be hosted personally or by a third party host.

When I cite another site's article, I put it in quotes and give them credit. Sometimes I provide links in this manner so they will get a site hit for their work. In the long run, it's usually best to paraphrase and skip all the legal hassle.
 
why not just post it like the rest of the news gets posted? Quote some interesting part of the articele and then link to the rest? That way if someone was really truly interested they would go to the link to read the rest.
