Hey guys here is my situation:

I need to build a new comp for school by late august, all around rig for games, etc.
I have some options I cant decide on.

Wait For Conroe All together ( dont know if this is even possible given time)
Buy conroe mobo, put cheap pentium D proc in until I can afford a conroe chip
Just Build a Pentium D 930 System now.

Im leaning toward the second option as time is an issue.

Thanks for any input.

Get a Conroe-ready motherboard, DDR2, and an 805D. Upgrade the 805D to a Conroe when the time comes. I honestly wouldn't bank on Conroe being around during your time frame, since most retailers are listing an ETA of mid-August for Conroe.

I'd buy a Intel D930 system now. Conroe boards are expensive, and that money could be better spent on a better Video Card. Get the DDR2 and SATA drive capability.

You won't be the fastest on the block a couple of months from now, but you'll have saved a bit of money and have a solid PC that can do everything you want it to.

How can you claim Conroe boards are expensive when only a few have come out. The ones out are mostly the high end ones. Besides there is a 58 dollar conroe ASROCK board on newegg. Wait a few weeks and you will see cheaper Conroe boards. Look at the Abit AB9, Gigabyte 965 DS4, etc when they come out...

Conroe is so close to hitting the streets it is silly not to wait at this point. Wait for a it a bit, or just buy the conroe capable board and e-bay the P4 once you upgrade.

since there seems to be no definite date for conroe, the few that have been given move up or back almost daily. i ordered the asus p5wdh deluxe, some g.skill hz ddr and an 805d. kind of a parallel move from my 3800 x2 @ 2900, but i wanted to get the jump on this. maybe intel can do better with supplying retailers with popular new chips than the dismal job amd does. also, i am hearing from 1/2 the people that i will have to flash bios on this board before it will support retail conroe, so i needed a cheap intel chip anyway. i was going to get the bottom celeron d, but after reading the thg article on the 805, and hearing i might not get a conroe for a couple months, i went for the $110 805.

There is an official date. Conroe's NDA is lifted July 14, meaning it will hit OEMs the same day and retail a few weeks later (gotta let the OEMs have their fun before releasing it to us).

I would wait as long as possible. If you can get a conroe then go for it and if not you should be at worst be able to get the best of the firstgen conroe boards.

I realize it's close, but it may be cutting it too close as it has to be built before late august. Many people are saying that retail chips may be in short supply, is there any truth to this?

Pre-order Conroe and wait it out :), or build a Conroe system with a P-D 805 in its stead temporarily, then plop Conroe in once it's out. However, pre-ordering does look wise at the moment either way... I did mine back in mid-June :D!

Get everything but the processor for a conroe build. If Duby is right and there are really only five working conroes in the world, you can still order an 805 from Newegg two or three days before you leave and have it in time.

True, that's what I think im going to do, the 805 is so cheap. Are there any mid-level (<$160) reviewed conroe mb's out yet?
