First let me start off with :( :( :( :(

Okay heres the story, I was playing CS when all of the sudden I heard something wierd happen in my computer. It sounded like my hd was spinning up again like it does when my computer starts up. It did this like twice then my computer completly froze. I shut it off then started again. It started up as normal untill I turned on aim it said program not responding. I try to stop it when my HD makes that noise again and my computer completly freezes. I try to restart again and my computer gets to the windows loading screen and just restarts again. It asks if i want to go into safe mode but and option i chose lead to the same thing. Now when I restart it just says Hard disk boot failure. Is There anything I can do? What do you recommened? I dont have enough moneys to get a new HD. =(
 
Boot with a boot disk and do a chkdsk on it. You probably have a few bad sectors. Depending on how bad it is, you might have to buy a new HD.
 
Looks like your hardrive just went to drive heaven. Is it still under warranty?
 
I'd also admit it sounds like a failing harddrive. Were you overclocking? If you're running XP, boot to the recovery console (off the cd). You might be able to recover some files from there.
 
I wasnt overclocking and its not under warrenty anymore. =( I dont have my windows disk anymore. Anyone know where i can download windows and stick it onto a disk? A friend of mine stuck windows professional onto this comp and I dont think it was exactly the legal version. I regular windows xp doesnt work anymore because it says ive registered the cd key too many times or sumthing likes that. How can i make a boot disk? Im on the labtop right now. BTW thanks for your replys.

stop leeching, i can't believe you have nerve not only to ask for a bullshit donation like that, but to do it under the name "cutiebrian55", real [H] man, real [H]. , oh, and then on TOP of that, not only do you want to leech off other [H]'ers hard earned $$, you also want a fucking 100gig HDD. A)beggars can't be choosers B)stop fuckin beggin and work.

now try this: take out your HDD and after carefully insulating it to prevent both electrostatic shock and moisture stick it in your freezer for ~36 hours. then try again, it should buy you some extra life by compressing the *somethings* of the HDD together so that it reads, i really don't know what they're called, maybe sectors? or plate sectors or something? sorry, all i know is i've seen it in A)PCMag and B)on several Forums.

Dude first of all calm down, seriously. I was just joking around haha. jeez. umm can i get a second opinion on the whole freezing thing? I mean I thought the only application of freezing stuff was to get the ramchips of my graphics card. what could I put it in to keep the moisture off of it? Just like a ziplock? thanks for your replies.

about freezing put it in an antistatic bag and then a zip bag(i could be wrong)
 
What kind of HD was it??? Was it one of those sucky IBM Deathstars, but anyways, it sounds like your HD is bad. There are a lot of deals going on with HD now.
 
Freezing it for that long sounds dangerous to me. I'd be afraid something would shatter. I'm not sure what the platters are made from, but I wouldn't want to risk it. Also, harddrives heat up quickly, so I'd definately be afraid of condensation.
 
okay computer has been off for about 3 hours and I put in a diagnostic tool from westurn digital and check out the hardrive. The whole thing checks out with 0 errors. I restart the computer and it works normaly maybe slightly slower but I may be wrong about that. Wth is up with this? was it a fluke? o_O
 
Was playing max payne this time and it made the noise and froze up restarted and it works again.... WTH = ( ::tears::
 
DAMN IT!!! i wanted to suggest the freezer trick!!;)

***I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY HAD THE FREEZER TRICK WORK W/ THREE DRIVES***

1. Take the hard drive out of your computer
2. Pre-set the jumper to slave or cable select so that you don't have to worry about it when you take the drive out
3. Stick Hard drive into a Static bag, and then into a ziplock bag for extra protection if you'd like
4. Place hard drive into freezer
5. Get a working desktop computer ready for the translant. You want to be able to plug in the dead hard drive as a "slave" drive so that you can copy all your information over to the working hard drive in the other computer.
6. After a HALF HOUR take the hard drive out of the freezer and put in in the preped machine
7. Turn on the machine, cross your fingers, and hope that the drive shows up and you can access your data

If you are lucky and are able to access your information, copy IMPORTANT files over in small packs, don't try to do it all at once. Usually you can buy youself about 3-5 minutes. If the hard drive crashes in the middle of the copy. Place the drive back in the freezer for 15 minutes and try again, this will buy you another 3-5 minutes. You can repeat this until you get all your data and/or your hard drive can't take it anymore and rolls over and dies for good.

DO NOT leave the hard drive in the freezer for 36 HOURS, it is completely unnecessary and probably lessens your chances for getting data. You don't need to freeze the thing solid, just get it good an cold.

I wish you the best of luck with this! You'll definately need it. This method sounds completely obsurd (at least i use to think so), it I WILL VOUCH that it does actually work, it has for me a few times. again GOOD LUCK! :D
 
Well, I dunno about the HD itself being bad if the checker found no errors -- at first description, I thought it would be your power supply -- the connector to your HD losing power, then fine, losing it again, until it finally lost all power on the drive (freezing everything up). What kind of power supply do you have? Wattage? Other hardware?
 
I have a enermax 430 watts. ive had some problems with the 3.3v but its stable now.

I had the same problem... In the end, the problem was the Molex connector. I noticed anything that was hooked up to a certain power connector would fail and cause my pc to freeze (hard drives would click). I looked at the connector and the cylinders were spread to far out. I took a screw driver and smashed them in a little bit. Everything is 100% stable now.
 
thats what i was going to say, as, from the sound of it, the HD was losing power, then spinning back up again, hence the boot up sound. i highly doubt the HD was going over 7200 rpm or whatever your hd is rated at.

switch to a different molex connector, or fiddle with that one.
 
okay now im strongly leaning towards the whole power problem. This one time I restarted my computer it said my radeon power cord wasnt in when it was. My hd and my readon 9800 share from the same cord thingy because I use a splitter to get to the hd and radeon.
 
After all this freezing I hope you have backed up your data by now.
