My personal AMD v. Nvidia thoughts

Plus, why is everyone saying two cards should be more difficult that one card? They go in the same kind of slot on the mobo, they have the same power connectors, a bridge is not hard to install, and inside the software you hit one checkbox to enable it. It's a stupid argument to try and say that MY argument is stupid.

Besides that, different generations being compared is abso-freakin-lutely necessary. Why? Because there's morons out there that think a GTX 600.001 is better than a GTX 590 because "the number is bigger." Grow a brain stem, then a brain, then share your opinion in your own stupid thread rather than telling me I'm a moron for feeling that two high end cards that are one generation behind a single high end card should've maybe held their water a little better.

Every time I deal with people I'm reminded of why I don't deal with people.

Good Job bro, you just keep on telling them bad guys. Your argument is super-freakin-buttmunchin-ginormously-awesome and makes everyone else's fact based arguments its bitch. The best, most abso-awsomo-tively-lutely part is when you schooled these mofos on how retarded they are for knowing that SLI and CFX don't scale perfectly/work in all games, do not provide 100% efficient performance return, and have to compensate for occasional software glitches related to the additional task of coordinating two cards to process one image in unison compared to a single card (which naturally avoids these characteristics based on the fact that a single card= 1 card and does not = 2 or more cards in SLI and CFX). Why is it that these fools cannot understand simple math like " 2 = 1 " therefore are directly comparable in terms of stability/performance/ease of use.

Its cause they aint "swag" enough.

*ahhhh...... to be 12 and swagalicious*

Multi-card setups typically give more technical problems compared with single card, regardless of gpu maker. The people who flamed you think that is the true reason why your upgrade worked better (you went from multi-card to single card). They do not believe Nvidia cards have better drivers or software vs AMD. Perhaps the flamers would have been happier had the thread been titled "my personal multi-card vs single card thoughts".

Enjoy your 670, it is a fine gpu.

Yes, because I personally hand-write the code that makes the two cards work together. It's no more difficult for ME to use two cards... as I pointed out... in very short or hyphenated words so that toolbags such as yourself could possibly grasp the concept. Also not sure where I said at any point that my two setups were comparable performance-wise, and in fact I am pretty sure there's hard evidence that I said "The speed is also much better but, again, that's not a great comparison." Sorry, that's my fault for using too many words and not enough pictures so you guys weren't able to understand. Perhaps next year, in second grade, this sort of thing won't happen as often.

I have both setups a single 670 gtx and a crossfire 7970 setup . And yes the single 670 wins all the time with ease till I take the 7970 out of crossfire . Both as single setups run flawless in drivers , pixel performance and speed . . Crossfire and sli produce alot of issue for the simple reason there not a great system in place to render frames evenly . Im selling one 7970 cuase ill take the 20 percent hit to render smoother and cooler . Whats better amd or nvidia none really this gen

lol, and yet you still go on missing the point completely what other people are saying. You really do sound like that first grade kid that you say the rest of us are. And calling people names really adds weight to your argument.

Ask nearly anyone on the forums, moving from any dual card setup to a single card setup will always feel better and give less problems. And it's nothing got to do with the simple process of putting the cards in your system and installing the drivers.

Basically you are saying that you went from a low-mid range dual GPU setup from the last generation (released in October 2010 btw) to a high end GPU from this generation and have noticed that things play better. Really, what a surprise!! lol whoop dee doo.

Also you moved from 1GB useable ram to 2GB useable ram which has a huge difference in mulitple monitor gaming, and that's going to make things seem much better too.

Heh, my post is basically a repeat of what I posted earlier oops..

But yeah, they're going to be beating a dead horse, it still stands, nVidia is more user friendly regardless of the situation....

Nvidia - generally a bit more stable drivers.

AMD - better on extreme settings, SSAA/game mods and better build quality (vrm) on reference cards.

No I think most of you are missing the point.

for the consumer, 1, 2, 3 or 4 cards should not be more difficult than 1 apart from the added cost and extra installation steps. If AMD and NV can't get their @#$# together and provide proper support for multi-gpu setups, then they should stop selling them until they do.

Why are people so "OK" with things not working right? everyone just chalks it up to, well if you want dual gpus you need to deal with the bad drivers / support etc. This is exactly the complacency that has allowed companies to slack on their quality.

It seems to be hit and miss with both companies. It could be some small piece of hardware that the drivers just dont like. It could also be not getting rid of the old drivers completely, or plain old user error.
Companies are greedy and dont work together for the consumers(most?), so the consumers pay for it. Just business..... rofl. Its just how it goes most of the time.

I recently added 2 28" Korean monitors to my setup and have had a few issues integrating them properly into my main rig. Enough so that I really want to get an Nvidia card now. No more AMD for me. Their drivers and CCC are so terrible. So many major bugs that never get addressed.

What?? What has this got to do with anything, unless of course to prove my argument to the OP.

Yeah sure, it shouldn't be any different running dual card setups than single card setups but there is, from both companies. But you are way off the mark for this thread. what has you telling me that multi gpu setups are worse than single gpu setups (which I know) got to do with the opening post?

I know multi-gpu setups have more problems, that's what most of the people in the thread have been trying to tell the OP.

This. :D

Where can i get my nvidia check $$$$ so i can start spouting anti-ati/amd drivel?

7xxx and 6xx are basicaly equal this generation, we got choice and that's all that matters.

I think the real problem is that people do not understand the difficulty of writing drivers that will work with multiple configurations of the hardware available to put into a computer. If you want flawless ease of use GO MAC!! My game machine is not an all purpose machine. I have few other applications in it that I know will not interfere. My 5870's in Crossfire have run flawlessly. I also buy higher end ASUS workstation motherboards for my gaming platforms. Some people will buy the cheapest stuff they can to build a platform and then get high end video cards.

I have both AMD and Nvidia cards. I use S3D on both and find the Nvidia experience easier for an out-of-the-box experience. On the AMD side not so easy but you have MUCH greater control over things. I was unhappy with their approach at first but after getting into it I understand what they are trying to do. They just have not done a good job at explaining it, that is a PR issue mostly. The card/company that is better is the one that suits you best, they are both amazing in their own right.

IF YOU ARE NOT AN ENTHUSIAST.....maybe this board is not for you. Most people here are pushing the envelope and want to know how they can push it further, look at the tone of the majority of the post. If anyone is looking for an out-of-the-box experience and run into a problem, people here are VERY willing to help. However when someone complains about a situation that is presented with apples and oranges data, it is viewed as un-necessary whining. Asking a question about a situation VS making a statement of complaint about that situation is treated very differently in this community.

I have to say this, This is probably THE best community I have ever experienced on the net. I believe that the guys that run this site are to be commended for the job they have done so consistently over the years. Thank You :D

but OP could have a perfect gaming setup with an nVidia card in a Mac!

It would never have any problems or viruses!

i think its pretty obvious who won this gen, i dont know why some people here are still in denial.

bringing an old game like Metro2033 and some console ports that run a tad better on on AMD to me is really baffling and double face palm like reaction when someone recommends AMD over Nvidia this generation.

Depends on how you clarify winning this generation, because frankly, GK104 pales in comparison's to GF110 (GTX 580) release, especially after being three months late.

I just wanted to use the first statement from your post about missing the point :p

I tried x-firing 2 5800-series cards..nothing but headaches.Any more powerful than 68** modern card with more than 1 GB VRAM would've solved your problem :)

Better multi gpu drivers!...this topic is full of missleading information. Single card drivers are just as good as nvidia, been runing a single amd card since 4,5 generations without any problems.98,99% of people use single gpus configurations, stop missleading people saying stupid things.

The black screens of death would say otherwise on the 7xxx series of cards.

The guy is right. Don't know why people are egging on him for sharing his experiences, even if they are not completely related. Bottom line is, while AMD/ATi's hardware is fine, their software has almost always fallen short in one way or another. And it's frustrating. Next gen I am going back to nVidia.

Add me to the list of folks who used to be on Team Red until I got fed up with lousy drivers.

I always, always had ATI in my original PC's (loved my AIW cards) but driver issues made me eventually try out an NV card and I never went back. Besides being faster, the drivers just worked.

It's one of those things where the hardware and the software have to both be stellar or the user experience can be miserable, and in general I've found NV to still have the better overall experience for me. If NV bones it up down the road and AMD gets their shit together on the driver front, I'd have no issues whatsoever about going back.

amd: 9800 pro, x800gt, 4870 1gb, 5870 2gb, 6950 2gb (unlocked)
nvidia: 4200ti, 7800gt, 8800gts, 670

with all of those cards i really havent had any issues that were driver/gpu related. granted, i have always used a single monitor and never sli/cfed. i would buy from either gpu company depending on price/performance.

i see all of these threads about people have drive/gpu issues and i wonder why i never seem to have these problems. am i alone, or are there other people out there who dont seem to have driver/gpu issues?

How about for a change you guys head over to Guru3D and read what people say about newest drivers? stop spreading BS.

I tried out a quadfire 5970 setup a few years back, was the worst experience ever. AMDs driver team was totally incompetent with that card. If I ever tried to upgrade past either the 10.4 or 10.5 driver it would BSOD immediately after trying to do anything that remotely used the GPU, even watching movies would trigger it If I stayed on the old old drivers it would STILL frequently BSOD just take a day or two tops before it did it.

I had a ASUS and a XFX because back then they were in low quantity and I couldn't find 2 from the same vendor but both were reference cards so that shouldn't have mattered. Really it didn't matter because I finally got fed up and pulled one out and the cards and STILL had BSOD issues, pulled that one out and put the other one in, yup still BSOD.

Got really fed up after almost a year and went out and got a GTX580, which according to reviews should have been a side grade at best, but immediately all BSODs went away, I actually doubled my FPS in the games I cared about, and it used way less power which was immediately noticable in my room.

My 580 chugged along just fine until I saw the reveal of the 690 at which point I thought "that's a magnificent piece of hardware, I really don't need it but by god I'm gonna have it", and despite my previous issues with dual GPU cards got one back in may. Just like the 580 before it, it works gloriously, noticably improved frame rates with even less power usage currently powering almost 10million pixels of screen real estate.

So for me, considering my experiences, driver stability and quality is now the #1 thing I look at when I'm even thinking about buying a new video card, and as [H] said in their opinion piece, AMD is severely lacking. The 5970 was supposed to be AMDs crowning jewel but they couldn't be bothered to give it proper support after their customers shelled out $600 per card. Just google "5970 BSOD", tons of people had this issue and the issue where drivers couldn't be updated, then google "GTX690 BSOD" I didn't see one that linked the BSOD issue to the hardware, they were mostly "I'm getting BSODs, oh and there's a GTX690 in my system specs".

nVidia may have the occasional driver issue ("oops melted a few cards"), but issues on the green side seem to actually get fixed (like replacing the cards they melted) where AMD seems a bit more content to take our money and run.

$1200 on AMD garbage, not touching their crap until either nvidia gets way worse or I start hearing on these forums how AMD not only caught up with nvidia but surpassed them in quality.

I have Quadfire 5970 and i don't get any BSOD because of them no matter what drivers i use.
So yeah it was Garbage for you but its been a joy for me, one size does not fit all.

Analogy: Nvidia is like an Apple pc. Passes the "it just works" test, but more expensive.

AMD is like a Windows pc. Better bang for the buck, but you need to do some troubleshooting on your own. Sometimes, things do not work the way they are supposed to. Solvable problems with a few google searches, or asking in forums like these.

that ANALogy sucks

I think it's more of case of people who don't know how to install a graphics card driver or properly run their PC look for something else to blame besides their own incompetence. Since ATI/AMD had driver issues a decade ago, it will be brought up again and again because people can't honestly assess their (lack of) ability. For the record, I've probably put together over 100 computers in the last ten years and out of 50+ video cards from both sides I've had three driver issues that needed more than an uninstall and reinstall to fix. If we're keeping a tally, two were NVIDIA and one was ATI.

I owned either AMD/ATi and Nvidia cards and had no issues at all. Sometimes I think this threads are way too pointless. The driver issues do occur, they only happen rarely on some specific games or configurations that's all.

Well excuuuuuuuuse me for getting a new piece of hardware that was impressive right out of the box and functioned perfectly in such a simple way that I actually felt a little tinge of happiness in the back of my otherwise useless-opinion-storing braincase and wanted to put something semi-public up to show my genuine pleasure that a good product had made its way into my hands.

OOOOOH, perish the evil notion that someone has an *opinion* about something on the internet. Quickly, let's flame him for not posting things that are either A) factual or 2: something we agree with.

Shoot, I even made it a "props to company x for doing a good job with y" type thing, not an "I hate company x and company z is so much bbqwtfwafflelol better" thing...

More of my stupid and inane opinions aside, maybe someone should just lock / delete this thread before it get trolled into the fan. Sorry for getting excited about something cool that happened, next time I'll just put on my cool internet tough guy glasses and go yell at something for no reason.

I could offer a rebuttal to every stupid thing that has made it into this thread, but I'd rather go enjoy my nicely-functioning hardware complete with lovely software instead.

ROFL what an epic reply..........kudos to you!

:D
