My PC freezes when I use Winamp!

I just installed a new HD and WIn XP. I figured there was a problem w/Win 2k r another program. Well, my PC freezes at random times only when I am listing to a song with Winamp. It will freeze and make this annoying eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sound. I have all updates, including SP1 & SP2 installed, so I have no clue what could be the cause of this. I am running Winamp v5.06.

Anyone have any idea as to what my problem might be?
 
Ive heard of the 'screech of death' with audigy / live cards and XP... it sounds like that... if you have an onboard sound card, try using that with winamp for a couple days just to troubleshoot and see if that's the problem... if it is then it's time to call creative labs' tech support.
 
Try changing the sound output from DirectSound to waveOut under the Options > Preferences > Plug-Ins > Output.

Click up in the left corner to bring down the menu and go from there, or just use CTRL + P to open the Preferences menu.

I don't have that taskbar enabled, but I opened it it & hit CTRL+P and nothing happens!

Not sure what to tell you then, those are the only two easy ways to do it. The other is to directly edit the winamp.ini file, but you'd need to know the specific lines to include to change the output.
