Yesterday I installed two gentle typhoons in push/pull mode on my H50. I played some games and encoded a few movies for a couple hours and during this time the cpu never went into the 60s. Then before going to bed I turned on prime and set it to the "max heat, some ram" torture test. Usually if my PC doesn't like a bios setting it blue screens and restarts, but this morning I walked over to it and surprisingly it was turned off. I tried to power it up and nothing. I then unplugged it and reset the bios jumper just incase and powered it back up. The fans try to spin for a half second, then nothing happens. Its dead:eek:. I had to leave for work and now I'm left to ponder all day as to what exactly died. CPU, Caps on motherboard, PSU? What do you guys think the cause of the problem is? I'm leaning towards the motherboard because I was at 1.50vcore and there was a lot less airflow over the capacitors with the h50. If it was the cpu, wouldnt it just blue screen and reboot?
 
if it was a hardware error it would normally BSOD and restart. even if it were a heat problem, it should restart instead of turn off.

the 'max heat" setting is also the one that would pull the most power. if you had a weak PSU it could have died, and possibly even taken some other things with it. is this the computer in your sig? that isnt a bad PSU brand though....
 
Yes, it's the PC in my sig. My corsair PSU is only about 6 months old too. If anything I thought I would wake up to a login screen. We didn't have any power outages or thunder storms either. I've got an old p965 board I can use to see if the cpu will post and I also have my old BFG 650 psu lying around somewhere.Too bad I wont be home til 8pm tonight :(.

the q6600 is an older CPU, prime95 could have just been too much for it to handle, or it could have been on its way out without actually giving you visible errors, and prime95 pushed it off the edge. hard to tell without playing around with it.

i would try removing the motherboards battery, unplug the computer from everything, push the power button a few times to release any stored up current in the caps, jump the cmos clear jumper if you have one, and wait for like 20 minutes for all the power to drain completely. then put the battery back in and see if it fires up.

if not, then try unplugging everything that isnt necessary for the computer to get to BIOS, like disk drives, CD drives, all but one stick of RAM, etc. if none of that works then try swapping your other hardware.
 
I'll definitely give that a try. I was hoping this setup would last me until sandy bridge...sigh.
 
I've had a few pc's do the fans spin up for a second and die thing. Always ended up being the PSU for me.
 
High likelihood of a failed PSU, which is fortunately pretty easy to troubleshoot. Next most likely culprit would be the motherboard. I would be very surprised if it was anything else.
 
I actually had the EXACT same thing happen to me last week. Turned out, one of my fans had shorted out. I originally thought it was a PSU or CPU but nope, I unplugged this 1 fan and everything checked out.
 
My Q6600 died in a similar fashion. Mine was running 3.51 ghz at 1.45 vcore (chip had a terrible 1.3125 vid). I left in on overnight and was woken up by my girlfriend telling me that they pc keeps rebooting over and over again. On my birthday no less. At least yours was priming, when died while idling.....for shame.

Man I hope I'm as lucky as you...I'll know in a few hours.
 
In the end it was just the motherboard that died. I ended up just buying a refurb p45 Neo2Fr from ebay for 60 bucks to hold me over until the hexacores go down in price or sandy bridge, whichever comes first.I don't know exactly what happened, but I'll lay off the vcore for now...:D
 
Yeah, prime95 or other stress testing programs can be pretty brutal. Glad to hear you got it worked out and without a horrible dent in your pocket either.
