In theory, my build was going to be very straight forward and consisted of the following:
Storage - iSCSI/FC target using Openfiler 2.99 in a Norco 4224 with an LSI 9260-4i and LSI 7204EP fiber channel card. Five Hitachi 3TB and 12 WD 1TB's
ESXI-01 host - HP Z600 with two E5540 2.53GHz with an LSI 7204EP fiber channel card.
Old (existing) file server - Win2k8, perc 5i with 8 1TB Western Digital (only 300GB free......) (would have been converted to be used as a back/test box/ESXI-02)
Openfiler turned out to be a PITA to configure with the LSI FC card. Ready to abandon that even though it has been very reliable for traditional iSCSI. No support for the LSI 7204EP cards in ESXI 5. When I received the Norco expander, the seller sent me the UEK-23601 instead of the CK23601. Rather than sending that back, decided to look at some of the of the all-in-one threads. They all look really cool. I'm going to try my hand at it with the following:
ESXI-01 host (usb boot):
Rosewill 4000 case
Supermicro X9SCM-F (love the IPMI)
LSI 9260-4i
Intel dual port nic
SFF-8087 to SFF8088 Adapter (http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sas_cables_adapters/AD8788-1.asp)
ESXI-01 storage (DAS):
Norco 4224
Chenbro UEK-23601
Antec Earthwatts 650
ESXI-02
HP Z600
Intel dual port nic
After a little more research, the LSI FC cards are recognized in pass-through mode. I'd like to have all of the VM's on esxi-02 be stored on the esxi-01 box. I'd like to use the FC cards since I got them really cheap (I love craigslist). I need to get my mind around how to configure my storage since I only plan on adding additional storage in the years to come.
My existing raid-5 setup has been 100% reliable, but has just run out of space in my Supermicro 825. It started as a W2k3 box and was updated to W2k8. It's been a traditional file server/media server for two users 4 media players.
I figure that one of my Win2k8 vm's would continue to manage all storage/shares on esxi-01. Is that how you guys are doing your all-in-ones? In my LSI volume group setup, I will have at least two groups since I have two different HD sizes. Besides having an area to store the VM's and their backups, what am I missing with this setup? Oh, by the way, I have all of this equipment except for the sff-8087 to sff-8088 adapter.
