What's up fellas. I recently bought an X2 4400+ to OC, but my Arctic Freezer 64 wasn't doing too good a job for Ocing purposes so I decided to go with water cooling. I got everything from the DDstore using the 20% coupon: PAGLAN06 . I will only be cooling my CPU for now.

This is the rig I will be cooling:
Antec Super Lan Boy -> 2x120mm fans
Fortron 400w -> 1x120mm fan
Asrock 939DUAL- SATAII
AMD64 X2 4400+
Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
G.SKILL Extreme 2GB (2x1gb) PC4000 DDR500
MSI X800 XT Platinum Edition
Hitachi Deskstar 80GB 8MB cache SATAII
Maxtor 160GB 8MB cache 7200RPM IDE
NEC ND-3520 16x DL DVD Burner
Hyundai L90D+ 19" 8ms LCD

The setup I ordered:
DD TDX CPU block
DD D5 pump
Black Ice Pro rad
2x Evercool Aluminum 120mm 80cfm Fans
Masterkleer 7/16" ID (5/8" OD) Tubing
DD Single Lucite 5 1/4" Bay Reservoir
MCT-5 non-Conductive solution

Total= $183 shipped

What do you guys think of this setup? I really wanted to get the Storm but it would have cost a whole lot more.
 
add $10. and get the 240mm instead of 120mm.

other than the rad, everyhting is great.
 
since its a single block setup it will be fine. But i do agree with Rysher would recommend going for a dual 120 rad.

This is going into a Super LanBoy so I don't have the space for a 2x120 rad, if not for that then I definitely would have gotten it.

How should I setup the loop order? I would like to go Pump>Radiator>CPU>Reservoir, but according to the install vid on the DD website the guy says to always put Pump to TDX.
 
loop order really doesn't matter, whatever creates the cleanest loop

You can go pump to Res>Pump>CPU>Rad

temps will not vary much

The new prevailing wisdom seems to be pump - radiator - CPU - ??? - res. The reasoning behind that is that you want the water going into the CPU to be at the coldest temperature in the loop. This happens right after the radiator.*

This really only matters if you are fighting tooth and nail for every last degree, as the difference in temperatures is not that big. So unless you are OCing to the edge of stability, loop order really doesn't matter. It's basically one of those "if you have to ask you probably shouldn't worry about it" things. On the other hand, if your case layout allows it, there's really no reason not to put the radiator before the CPU.

* This would be moot if you have a pump with no heat dump, but for any of the immersed rotor pumps, almost all the power output of the pump goes into the water as heat. For other types of pumps (any pump with a sealed bearing), you'll have to do some research on heat dump.
 
To be honest, I've tried both methods...


Within minutes my temperatures were exactly the same. I used AS Ceramique under the processor so we can't say that I "broke the thermal bond of cured AS5" (which can happen BTW).
 
It doesn't matter what your order is. Just use the shortest route with the least amount of bends.

If I were you I'd stay away from the MCT-5. It left some nasty stuff in my loop. Take a look at this picture. The the difference in tubing? One's new tubing and the other is post-MCT-5. Just use distilled water and coolant:

you should be able to fit a dual 120 rad up top if you sacrifice a 5.25 bay, if not, you can always mount it in the back using swiftech's rad box
 
also the reason why DD would say pump to tdx is cuz the tdx has those nozzles right? blocks like that REALLY want the highest preassure of water flow to work most efficiently. the rad first concept is better for other loops using low restriction blocks like apogees, maze3's etc etc etc.

but, SHORTEST TUBE lengths trumps ALL.

That's exactly what I was thinking. On one hand I want the coolest water going to CPU which is right after the rad, and on the other hand I want the most pressure going through it because of the accelarator nozzle, and that's right after the pump. But I guess I'll go with what ever the best route is for the tubing like you guys said.

and remember, since hte water circulates, the loop acheives an equilibrium really. my i and out temp sensors in the water show a 1/2º difference on idle and a 1.5º diff on load? for a short time? so really, rad before cpu is below on the list of priorities. short tubing runs is higher, and for jet impingement blocks, pump-to-block is higher. easily.
