Went to Samy's Camera yesterday and bought this:

Here's the breakdown:

I am pretty new to DSLRs (or SLRs for that matter) so any tips & tricks would be greatly appreciated. Any Lens recommendations are also welcomed, I would like a wide angle lens next (just something reasonable and fairly inexpensive).
I believe the firmware is already updated (Firmware 1.0.2.)! :) !


Also, I have Photoshop CS with my Canon Pro1's Raw Plug-In and now that I have the Rebel XT, I want to add the Canon XT's Raw plug-in also. Is it possible to have both? Or is there any way I can do that?

Well, it will have to be in the near future, so maybe $100 - 300 ($500 will definately be cut off line for lenses unless I really have to have it :p ).

Dude, would you happen to have an answer or solution to my Adobe Photoshop plug-in dilema? I just downloaded the Rebel XT's Raw Plug-In but I am afraid that if I drag and click it into my Photoshop CS folder, it will overwrite my Canon Pro1's Raw Plug-In :( ! I want to have both, should I just rename one "Camera Raw 1" and leave the other alone?

What exactly does this raw plug-in do in CS? I have my 300D and CS, but I don't think I have a raw plug-in for the two...??

Nice catch except for the Tamron lens. ;) I got a Digital Rebel XT from Circuit City about a week ago. I opted for the kit with the Canon 18-55 lens. It came with a cleaning kit, a Centrios camera bag with another cleaning kit and a three year CC extended warranty for about $1100. No CF card but I have three 256 meg cards already. Earlier this week I purchased a new Canon EF 55-200mm f/ 4.5-5.6 II USM lens for $223. My next lens will be a EF-S60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. :)

What's wrong with the Tamron? It actually does a decent job and they ran out of the "kit" lens. I like the Tamron better compared to the plastic feeling kit lens :p ! Have you tried the Battery / Vertical grip with the XT, it is totally a better feel, and functional to add :).

The Photoshop CS Raw Plug-In is kinda like "developing" pictures. Basically, you set your camera up to Raw instead of Large or Medium, or small Etc... Then you drag the Raw pictures onto your Photoshop and tweak a few things like brightness, contrast, noise reduction etc.. etc.. etc..

It basically shoots what the camera sees instead of turning it into Jpeg which supposedly "lose" image quality (I think). Someone can probably explain it better. All I know is that I shoot Raw images with my Pro1 and somewhat prefer it :)!

Nice stuff!! The 28-105 should be a nice lense to start off with, much better than the kit lense IMHO.

A few suggestions, Check out FM Forums! I asked for some PS help and got 5ppl pm'ing me with about 20min reads on PS stuff. DON'T LEAVE THE DUST CAP OFF THE BODY!! Your just asking for dust to get in there doing that. The body should be the first thing you cap and last cap you take off.

Now that you got the stuff, lets see some pics ;)

Thank you. Thanks for all the helpful infos. I also like my lens compared to that of the kit lens. I will check out/ search for the FM forums . I will cover the body immediately everytime, I don't want any dust to get in...

Just leave your lens on, no need to take it off for the night or something lol, your gonna attract more dust that way. You only have one lens right now so leave it on.

I actually have to remove the lens because I am still putting it back in it's box until I find the SLR camera Backpack that I want... I like the Canon Backpack but whatever I find that looks great and functions, will do. I actuall check Dpreview religously, along with Stevesdigicam! And yes, If I need anything, I will be sure to ask you guys here.

I've mentioned this here in the distant past, but we've got a Tamrac Cyberpack 8 here at work, and I love it. You'll find a few different models which mainly vary in size, I think. They're not cheap, but they're extremely flexible and spacious. They're designed to hold a laptop, too, if you're into that kind of thing.

Nice, I am actually looking into the Tamrac Velocity 7 Sling bag :) or the Canon 200EG!


I'm leaning more towards the Tamrac because it looks very functional and aesthetically pleasing :)! This "backpack" easily turns into a "frontpack" which allows instant access to your camera :).

O'Doyle, have you priced any other lenses ? Holy Moly ! Some of them are very expensive. I've got my eye on a 100mm macro lens but I'd rather have a 180mm macro. I don't think the wife would be too happy with me if I got the 180. :D I'm still reading and rereading the manual. Someday very soon I'll start shooting a few pics. :)

Seriously :( ! What is up with lenses being so damn expensive? I am/was looking into a few wideangle lenses and macro lenses and was amazed at how expensive they are :(. Oh well, time to save up :) !
 
I'm already saving. ;) I'm deciding on a 60mm macro or the 100mm macro now. The 180mm just isn't in my budget right now. Maybe I can trade my 89 Iroc-Z for one. :D
 
Depending on how much macro work you do, you may consider an FD Mount 50mm prime lens (ancient lens that could be picked up cheap cheap cheap). The trick is to mount it on...in reverse! It'll get you decent magnification, and you can stop the lens down ( since it is fully manual with apeture rings ) to get rid of flare or whatever other image effects it was that happen wide open. (There are sensor dust risks with this method, however -- and working distance isn't paticularly great)

Or just get a +4 close-up filter to screw onto the front of your lens (and perhaps a few more +1, +2 diopters to focus closer). It is a decent way to start out in Macro without killing the bank, and still get acceptable image quality. Just shoot at f/16 or so with it and you'll be fine.


And nice kit for the price. For ~$1200 I got my Digital Rebel (300D) + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens + 85mm f/1.8 lens. Had to buy the CF card for more (Sandisk Ultra II, 1GB), along with a 420EX Speedlite/Flash. I'm also saving up for a 70-200mm f/2.8 from Sigma...about $650... Why can't the price of quality glass come down so we don't lose an arm and a leg? :( :D
