Mobo: DFI nf4 ultra D
CPU: 3200+ winchester
Ram: geil PC3200 2x512 2-3-3-6
hard drive: dual seagate SATA 80GB raid0/Maxtor 250 gig PATA data drive
Video: connect3d x800xl
PSU: anted smartpower 2.0 400w

:)

Yeah... keep bragging.

You might want to change the RAM.
You might want to change the PSU.

Is there really any reason to have RAID 0 anyway? It's been proven to be insignificant.

why change the ram? geil is great stuff. I've gotten some killer overclocks with it

While you are correct about RAID0 being a crock, his power supply is fine (supplies 25A across 2 +12v rails, his system consumes about 18A at absolute maximum load).. and there is nothing wrong with his RAM, either. You have a really bad habit of criticizing others' decisions, then not backing up your statements at all.

Yeah dude.. not cool.

Nothing really WRONG with the Geil, and the price isn't too bad either...just wouldn't be my first choice, especially on that mobo. TwinMOS or Crucial are pretty much my first line picks. I'm with GFX on this one...you might want to change it. Then again if you already have it there's no reason to go spending more to replace it.

Why a Winchester though? Venice is out, reasonably priced, and you get better overclocks plus a few tweaks.

And yeah, lose the RAID 0...there isn't much use for that on a desktop, and even less as a system drive. Content creation workspace volume is one of the more common actually useful workstation applications. If you want a fast system drive get a single Raptor 74GB or something.

As to the PSU, the manual for the DFI board says it strongly recommends an absolute minimum of 400W, in bold italic type. You might want to consider getting something that's not pushing the minimum requirements.

As I've said time and time again, wattage is a fallacy. Your average bullshit '400w' PSU that comes with a case, has terrible design and supplies about 14A on +12v (what really matters) is what they have to plan for. Terrible PSUs. A 400w supply from Antec is a whole 'nother story. Same as nVidia says you need a 550W or so supply to run 2 cards in SLI-- which isn't true; you can easily run an A64 machine with 2 6800GTs on an Antec True 430w supply.

Please read the link I posted above, it explains this all very clearly.

i trust geil, I've been using it for a very long time.

ZZF didn't have them in stock, and i was restricted to a VERY tight budget on this system

i think my decision is the right one. I like playing with raid. the more goofy shit i do, the more i learn, the better my real job gets ;)

that's just funny.

ding.

again, I've been using antecs for a really really REALLY long time. if i ran my old system on a 350w antec, i can certainly run my new system on a 400w

I apologize for coming out like that. I wasn't feeling... right.

The reason why I said to change the RAM is because of the RAM timings alone and you can make do with other types of RAM with BH-5/UTT chips better. Now, with simple reasoning, I found out why you went for Geil. The pricing. You state you're under tight budget and for that reason alone, I can understand. But can that RAM guarantee low timings? It has 2.5-3-3-6 (or 2.5-4-4-8, following NewEgg's specifications). If you're going to intend on using the computer for anything except gaming and heavy file usage, then I can't complain. But there is my concern for that high timings if you are going to game and such. It is possible to get performance loss using that RAM, although not by any means noticeable but it happens. The better RAM I can at least recommend is Corsair's Value RAM, or even Kingston's. Those two RAM's are capable of reaching 2 cas timings, not guaranteed however. And when buying both RAM's, it will be in fact, cheaper than Geil's ($5-7 dollars off-- followed by NewEgg's pricing).

Now, the PSU. The only reason why I decided against that PSU is the SmartPower name. Like I said above, I don't know if you will be using it for gaming or not. I decided safe so I advised against the SmartPower series. Even Czar said so. I have not kept track with Antec's updated SmartPower PSU series so I'm actually unsure what might be up with them currently. If you are going to be gaming, the SmartPower series would not be the ideal choice because of their slightly high 5% regulation. Under load, the PSU may or may not crap out. There are some people who have overclocked to high speeds with this PSU, but only with higher watts such as 450, etc. However, stable at idle. It certainly it won't be stable under constant load. For your budget, there's nothing better than Fortron's or Sparkle's. Under 3% regulation and high quality.

Edit: Epicenter says this PSU is just fine. With those amps, I can agree. But let's not leave out the factor of how well the PSU can hold up, even without maximizing its amps.

Enjoy!

To even use this reason is just plainly bad, IMO. You should look out for new hitcomers. Anything against Kingston or Corsair? Anything against even Mushkin? I certainly wouldn't hope so, otherwise that would be naive.

it has 2.0-3-3-6, not 2.5, and it takes 2.95v. what exactly is "crap" about that?

edit: and those timings are FACTORY. so they're Guaranteed

The only thing I'd say against the psu is isn't a little old, so perhaps a newer one from antec would've worked. Not sure if you could've fit it into your budget. Btw, I like my 400watt smartpower too. However, I did test out a 430watt truepower before I returned it to BB, and was more pleased. It was much quieter.

Firstly...the 2.0/2.5, and the 6, mean very little. The *-3-3-* part is more significant. 2-3-3 isn't bad, but you can get memory that'll do *-2-2-* if you wanted to. It'd help in some things.

Factory specs are fine and all, but the factory isn't the only place RAM can be tested.

He just pointed out my reasoning for not going with this RAM. :)

I said cas 2, but I meant everything 2 (2-2-2). I've read some success and failure stories on the Geil though so YMMV.

it's a 2.0, so it's brand spanking new.

just FYI to anyone using geil ran and NF4-U-d be sure to update your bios.

running 2.5ghz right now.

yeah, i read it, but the Venice core is not that much more than a Winchester and your OC would be a lot higher, why limit yourself only to ZZF?

3200+ Winchester- $190
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103502
3200+ Venice- $229
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103535
or OEM for $199 ($9 more)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103534

If $40 really makes that much of a difference you probably should not be building a new gaming rig.

maybe money management > you

Monarch has it for $209/199 OEM. Their variety of V/SD chips is better and their prices have been a bit more consistant.

wouldn't money management say that i didn't need that extra $40 for a venice core?

i did fairly well considering my budget. this winchester is more than enough to tide me over til i can go dual core.
