Howdy

I was following some threads on the hardforum with a lot of interests.

A brief history
* i used to build systems for like 10 years) but for the last 4 years I was stucked with a laptop that now is used by my mother)
* i was looking for a small sff that is able to play blue-ray and do some casual 3d gaming
* from the very beginning I wanted a quad Intel system
* when ATI released the 48xx series I decided that I want one (4850)

I waited for the g43/g45 mainboards but in the end I got the nicer DFI JR P45-T2RS.

Now let's see what I have:

So after I received yesterday the mb and got to a computer store to buy the Pcie power adapter I started the journey.

The main critical points:

1. PSU - will the 300W be enough for powering the system (from the PSU calculator I ended up with around 260W for my system)
2. Heat - the 4850 with a default cooler will probably melt this small system so I will probably replace the 4850 cooler.

Problems encountered building the system:
* main power connectors cables too tight since they have to go round the 4850
* the additional power cable too short - have to reroute it in a not so efficient way
* cabling not clean and crowded in a small area

But in the end I finally succeded completing the task. I will not close the case until sure about temperatures/alternatives. Meanwhile I've ordered a Zalman vf900 cooler to help the 4850 a little bit.

Later (after the weekend) I will post screenshots/tests from the build.

I can only confirm that it works and it is stable running SuperPI+3dMarkVantage. The PSU copes without problems by now. Only one thing the heat from the 4850 is heating the rear part of the case pretty much.

in my head i'm not too sure the dfi jr p45 board is that great unless you're using crossfire. i've seen better overclocks on the p5e-vm, p5k-vm, and g33m-ds2r. then again the dfi is new and hasn't really been broken in yet. but we're not here to criticize the mobo. :D

you might get a good reply from the psu section. i've seen smaller power supplies do big things, but i dunno man, skimpin out on the psu for a build of that quality seems strange to me. i know the fsp 300's are good + they have a small footprint, but not sure if they are THAT good. money don't seem to be that much of a concern so i'd say go with something having a little more power, less noise, better efficiency. are the temps on the psu doin ok? i'm not sure what running that psu hard like that will do over a long period of time. maybe it's ok since it's got the 100,000 hrs mtbf, but that's specced at 25C's. Don't know many psu's that operate at 25C's /w a lot of power draw, and hot components.

what case are you using? Those 4850's run hot. if you plan on running them in an matx case make sure you get an aftermarket cooler, or a case with really good airflow.

i say play a movie for a while, play games for a few hours. see how it does. if it's only going to be on a few times a month then it should be ok (a little overkill for such a nice system to only be used a few tiems a months). if it's going to be on for long periods of time, dunno, i wouldn't risk it. $50 psu to power $250 cpu + $150 video card always bothers me. clean power is pretty darn important. i've seen 2 computers one /w an insufficient psu the other /w a cheap psu blow up and kill all the components (i still have nightmares about that 9800pro i lost) ;p


edit: i take it back. PVHK just hit 560fsb.
