The other day I had to go to, of all places, Sears, where I happened to stumble upon a steel rolling tool box made by Companion. This will be my new LAN box . The MOBO, PSU, HDD's will all go under the two sliding doors that serve as the top of the box, along with the optical drives. The two drawrs will hold things like the keyboard, mouse, software, etc. Larger items, like the joystick can be placed on the bottom. The monitor can be placed on the top of the box while going from my truck into the lan, and everything will be on wheels and in one box. About the only thing I have to decide on yet, is whether to use a removable MOBO tray (like one from a Lian Li case) or just drill and tap holes for the MOBO risers right into the box. I know that using the removable tray will make things a lot easier, but mounting the MOBO directly to the box would look a lot cleaner.

I hope you're a big dude, that thing weighs 78 lbs even without a computer.

Putting everything on wheels sounds like a good ideal, but what about if you have to go downstairs?

LOL.......is 6'1" and 265 LBS big enough???? :D

I always bring at least one friend with me to a LAN so I will have help getting it in and out of my truck.

yeah, i thought the whole concept to a lan box was the idea of the smallest and lightest thing possible, lol.

you're just going in the complete opposite direction with that monstrossity!

Yes I am going in what you call "the complete oposite direction", and I am doing that because I am not one to keep up with the Jones's. I prefer to stand out in a crowd.

more power to ya man, but for me, if going against the flow means sacrificing convenience then i'll glady be a lemming.

mmm lemmings. Be sure for proper cooling in the tool chest.

Trust me..........I am well aware that plenty of fans are our friends. :D This thing will be sporting no less than two 120mm intakes and two 120mm exhaust fans, all on a rheobus.

I have one of those, silly to think i put tools in it...

Going to look very cool.. a bit heavy, but if you can handle it. :) Can't wait for pictures.

Among all the replies to my posting here, nobody offered thier opinions to the MOBO mounting possibilities, which were.......About the only thing I have to decide on yet, is whether to use a removable MOBO tray (like one from a Lian Li case) or just drill and tap holes for the MOBO risers right into the box. since i didn't help you earlier, thought i better at least give my opinion.

pro and cons:

if you mount straight to the tool box, it will not only be cleaner, it will also be one less thing to get.

I really can't see too much of an advantage for a removable mobo tray in this case. I mean the thing has tons of space inside, plenty of room to work with, and i can't see why you'd need to remove the mobo unless to upgrade.

Just make sure to plan out where to place the mobo before you actually drill the holes. Make sure you put it in a place w/ ample room to work with so you don't hit your hands on stuff when you work on it.

And i know this sounds like common sense advice to you, but just to remind you, make sure you have adequate clearance between the mobo and the tool case.

for heaven's sakes man, turn it into a server rack! :)

I'd vote for mounting directly over the MB tray

While I do agree that mounting directly to the box would look a helluva lot cleaner, I am kinda worried about aligning the drill holes perfectly to the MOBO. Another thing to worry about is how would I secure the expansion cards?? If I go with a removable tray, I can guarantee that the MOBO will be mounted to a stable surface and can be upgraded later without having to drill new holes, also the expansion cards (sound, video, etc) will also be properly secured. I think I am leaning towards the Lian Li tray, if you know of any other trays that could work as well, please let me know. Thanks for all the replies and any future help as well.

As long as you stick with ATX/mATX, you won't have to drill new holes when getting a new motherboard. The form factor specifies where exactly all the holes will go. You can get the holes lined up properly by laying the MB flat, taking a pen/pencil/marker, and making a mark on the surface through the holes. You do have a little wiggle room because of the size of the mounting holes on the MB, so don't worry about it too much.

One idea I've seen with graphics/PCI cards is to mount the motherboard so that the back of the drawer (or whatever) is in the same place the backplate of the case would be. Then dremel appropriate holes into the back of the drawer to match the cards you'll mount. If you want, you can even use the screws on either side of VGA/parallel/serial/joystick ports to secure the backplate to the MB/card even better
