Heres the main bulk of what i am buying. The only thing that I can't buy atm to complete my godly PC is the video card which should come out soon so I can get my hands on it..... Sadly There are no motherboards out and probably won't be any out for a good 2 months for amd with pci-e expansion slots which makes me sad but not sad enough to wait 2 months in college for it.... I can do a few weeks without a video card tho.

Motherboard Abit AG8
CPU Intel Pentium 4/ 3.4C GHz 800MHz FSB
Memory Pmi Turbo Memory Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 2GB (1GBx2) DDR PC-3200
Video Card PCI-E Radeon X800 XT PE (when it comes out i'll buy it)
Harddrive Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Second Harddrive Maxtor 120GB USB 2.0 One Touch\

Then theres the normal 60 dollar snazzy case from newegg and I'm gonna get a 19 inch CRT monitor for the machine and a logitech normal ps2 keyboard and a logitech optical cord mouse also ps2..... Prolly get a creative 5.1 speaker system. Sound nice? Opinions or possible corrections you think I need to make before I start ordering would be helpful. Also going to get a plextor dual layer format dvd/cd burner.

also on a side note i'm desiding right now wether to stick with a usb 2.0 drive and a internal drive or get two internal maxtor 200 gig drives and run them in raid 0, what u all think?

get an AMD 64, it will be a little faster, future proof, and when win XP 64 comes out this year, it will be even faster than the p4.

yes but i'm going to college in two months and I WANT PCI-E.... amd doesn't have that atm so I guess this go around they loose for me.... :(

Arrrgh... PCI-E right now is overhyped. In real-world benches, it currently offers no advantage whatsoever over AGP8x.

If someone were to say AMD 64 is future proof, then the argument could be made that PCI-E is future proof is well. I have never seen anything that is "future proof". PCI-E isn't only for video....SAS SCSI PCI-E controller cards come to mind.

Anywho, looks like a good system. I have yet to read anything about a dual layer Plextor burner, but I'm sure they have one in the works, and $$ will be involved (I'm also a Plextor fan). As far as your storage question, do you need a bunch of storage? If not, some would argue raiding Raptors, and using the 200 gb drive as backup. I would consider a u320 SCSI for C: (more better than SATA, for many reasons), and the 200 for backup, maybe going as far as having the backup as external. You failed to specify what this rig will be for; gaming/video editing/storage/etc. I would assume with 2gb of ram that you are planning heavy rendering/editing. Also, I'm not familiar with the brand of ram you selected, can it do good timings/oc's?

That recommendation depends on which OS is he planning to run. You see, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4, as well as all extant officially released versions of Windows XP to date, have issues with SCSI hard drives - applications will run noticeably slower on those OSes with SCSI hard drives than they would with many IDE and SATA hard drives.

Examples? I do remember when 2K/XP came out that there was a bug that was easily fixed, but I can't think of any apps that run slower because it's on SCSI.

Why? You should be able to get AGP parts for as long as any machine you buy today is truley useful.

Isn't this the "Intel Processors" subforum?

and

Isn't this thread's title "My new intel machine"?

anyway- I am of the opinion that the PSU is a critical part of the machine; I'd look into the PCP&C options if you can fit it in your budget. They range from $40 to over $250 (the 510 Deluxe I just bought- got a custom wiring harness for $50 more than the MSRP of $200..).

Also, I'd stick with your current setup until you figure out what works once you get to school.. Most people don't have a clue until they've settled in for a couple weeks or months (speaking from experience. I started with a PII laptop (that dates me :D) and quickly figured out a desktop was the way to go..)

i'm building this machine for school work and for hardcore gaming, I know amd is the way to go for that but, theres just no pci-e for it and everquest two also comes out in 2 months which is a big reason i'm building a machine this fast. The memory is 2 gigs because in everquest one recommended when they updated the graphics was 512 so i got 512 and i still couldn't run everything on high and the recommended for eq 2 is 1 gig so i'mma get 2 gigs so its sure to not screw up and also when a lot of people lets say 70 are on screen at once it helps alot... i'm getting pci-e because it may not be a huge advantage atm but with drivers maybe they can make the x800 bench faster in pci-e and later on down the road agp is gonna be a thing of the past and i don't want to have to upgrade my otherboard and graphics card a second time in 2 years. Should I go with one 130 dollar range sata 10,000 rpm drive and get a maxtor one touch for backup or get two 130 dollar range 7,200 rpm drives and run them in raid 0 or us one as a master and other as a slave?

I was referring to the hard drives with my generic example.. :D

I'd go with the internal 10k rpm and an external USB until you figure out your storage needs. By that time Seagate will have it's 400GB SATA drives out.

I think i'm going to go with a 10,000 rpm drive now that I think about it and a 7,200 rpm mator one touch for songs and music, the 10,000 rpm drive for games and stuff of that nature.

Why not just try to get rid of the AG8 and wait on the i925XE? Both 915 and 925 will be obsoleted quickly once the 1066FSB 925XE is released.
